A good mix of gameplay and aesthetic. Story's not as important to me but sometimes it's so good that it could be my favorite part of the game

    Define gameplay lmao

100% physics and gameplay. If the physics sucks the game sucks. Character movement is literally the first thing I play around with in a new game.

    Gameplay/mechanics>>>story>>>>>graphics

I will say the graphics get me interested on first impressions or the intial "pop out" factor

But if im waiting for like a sequel or something then it takes a backseat

  • Sep 25, 2020

Borderlands in general has an iffy story and borderlands 3 in particular was trash for no reason but gameplay got better with every game

Pre sequel was a sideways step but still good

i see a lotta people saying this but be quick to dismiss a game cause it dont look good

Ok but im very not interested in that avengers game

  • Sep 25, 2020

Gameplay > Story > Graphics. Tho it depends on the game like the turn based final fantasy games im not a big fan of the gameplay but the stories save it for me. It's also a reason i can never get into witcher 3 the gameplay is f***ing horrendous

I mean, that s*** dont look good and the gameplay don't look good either

what i mean is that a lotta people say that graphics matters to them the least but when a new game is shown the first thing people judge is the graphics, without even seeing the gameplay too. I feel like people underestimating how much they value graphics.

I remember in the FF7 remake thread, when people recommended the OG version other people were quick to dismiss it cause it looked 'outdated'

I mean what's the point of playing something if playing it isn't good, it doesn't make sense for it to be a game imo

It’s not really a question of “good” or “bad.” I don’t even like evaluating media in those terms because I find it to be reductive and hardly ever conducive of meaningful discussion.

If I want good story only I'll read a book or watch a movie if I want sound and images too but to me the real art in video games is in how it can project you into another space and makes you feel things that are very visceral and instinctive

Sure, you can find stories in novels and films, but that doesn’t mean storytelling should be exclusive to those mediums. Just like literature has prose and film has visual storytelling, video games have their own suite of language that developers are still figuring out. Those interactive “visceral and instinctive” experiences can all be delivered within the context of a story.

Of course they can but most story focused games don't manage to pull this off and most of the games I've play that would put focus on story made gameplay and mechanics separated from the story. I find myself not enjoying games at all when I have to sit through blocks of texts and long dialogues with not much interactivity, I think it's just lazy and uninteresting

    Gameplay > Story > Graphics

Sometimes there are exceptions to this, Spec Ops The Line is the best example imo, it has the most generic cover shooter type gameplay out there but the story is so good it makes up for most of the flaws in the gameplay and is the primary reason you keep playing the game.

What he and I are trying to say i think is that games should first and foremost be fun to play, if the game mechanics and subsequently the gameplay is bad, no matter how good of a story it has i wont enjoy that certain game. If a game plays nice and has a good story on top of that, that just adds to the quality of the game. Basically, my criteria for a good game is mostly the gameplay. I wouldnt think so highly of Mario and zelda if they didn't have amazing gameplay, and they got close to no story at all

    Probably not the best example

I value gameplay a lot tho which is why I was confused when I heard something like that then come in this thread and seeing everyone say they value gameplay the most.

I think that whilst people maybe do value gameplay when they are actually playing the game I think that graphics plays a major role on whether they decide to try the game out in the first place

Also gameplay has to be interesting and the mechanics have to be fun to engage in, that's why open world games almost always suck these days, the ubisoft formuila for open world is tired and feels like a chore 90% of the time... We need a return to games that are more open in their mechanics than in the size of the map

For me it’s the story. The gameplay and graphics don’t have to be top notch for me. I came up during the Super Nintendo era so I don’t trip too much. But if the story is ass I won’t finish the game no matter how good the game feel/look.

  • Sep 25, 2020

style and expression for sure. it's awesome when a games mechanics, story and graphics all mesh together to express a broader narrative. that's why bioshock is so sick. or death stranding

or games that act entirely as a system you can mess around in, like rimworld or kenshi

This is all perfectly valid, but I’m personally looking for more out of video games as a medium than gameplay on its own. To paraphrase what I said in my original post: I care about video games as a storytelling medium, and I find gameplay that is contextualised by narrative to be more meaningful.

I personally have zero interest in games that lack story (e.g. Mario), but that’s fine; I’m not asking for those games to cater to me. I mostly play RPGs and narrative-driven action games where story serves as the backbone of the experience (e.g. Persona, Nier: Automata, God of War), and it’s those games that I find to be the most engaging.
