Its crazy how much they turned rap on its head and how it may be a long time before we see artists that impactful again but where else can someone take it lol. Its at the point where going back to the fundamentals would be just as jarring

Time and the way things progress is wild. I doubt either of them thought or set out to do that to rap in 1999/2003 but once its on its on lol

They’re fresh evolutions of the leading archetype in rap that was going on since 1998 at the time: post Pac. DMX and Em running s*** when they did lines up perfectly with this as well

What’s the leading archetype rn? That’s where we start

Billy woods mavi and earl etc slumscore is the closest modern descendant imo

but its less crazy theories that dont make sense and moreso replacing that content with sociopolitical theory/literature rearranged

I miss it too but people would take it too literal and virtue signal. Niggas make it a point to insult “hoteps” and that vibe of theory whenever they can, for various reasons…lol. im suprised hov and jay got away with their collab album lol

because hoteps be on some weird schizo s*** half the time lol, we have a resident schizo hotep and he’s literally brain damaged

  • Jay E the only dude that i can think off top that does that Killah Priest style of rapping to this day but he isn’t a modern guy

This honestly another whole thread lol but we can do it here

For one i wanna stay on what archtypes you think Ye and Wayne each come from respectively edit: i just saw you said Pac. Crazy how that evolved to what it did for both of them by 07-08. And crazy that Pac’s rap dna so wild it can spawn two completely different artists like that

And right now there are a few main ones that stick out but the main two are street rapper (and there are like 3-4 variations of this lol) and street adjacent hypebeast/lifestyle type trap rappers (Yeat Carti Yachty) but subconsciously isnt implied to be a hands on type dude.

For as much as he is polarizing ian had a somewhat clever take on the second archtype by doing the same thing yachty or carti does (suburban or non street kid toeing the line of rapping eary 2010’s trap type subject matter but not getting too graphic) but its controversial because of the suburban aesthetic. Veeze also spun the street rapper archtype into something thats kind of his own with subtle tweaks

Then theres also the slums earl / billy woods or roc marciano boldy james types

    🤣🤣🤣

not debating that but i feel like the opinions and mental stability of those type rappers is under way more of a microscope bc of the implied “intelligence” of the subject matter they hovering around vs nobody flinching when kodak or any of these rappers say some dumb sht. If we got ignorance in the direction of the lovable hood nigga i wouldnt mind ignorance in the direction of the conspiracy theory nigga in the barbershop who grazes against validity every now and then lol. Its kinda what we missing in rap’s mainstream lmao

For as much as I miss 2009-2015, Jay Elect on Roc Nation at that time would have had to make a certain type of music to really have a career which probably why it didnt happen lol

Think everything that went wrong with J Cole first album except Jay Elec didnt even have the college kid thing going lol

In 2009 there was a market for Jay E but it wasnt the level Roc Nation was targeting for sure. Having a lyrical heavy hitter like on that on your label is a good look even if they dont sell, it shines a light on your other acts. You are the company you keep type s***

Like others said, it’s not cool anymore

Especially with the lyrical rappers nowadays. They always end up rapping about corny s*** or conspiracy theory s*** or rap about rap or sound like YouTube rap

Most of it can be refuted.

Nature of the threat in ‘96 sounds hard until you listen back and realize a lot of what Ras Kass was saying had mad inaccuracies

  • Sep 5, 2024

crazy that the underachievers was brought up twice on first page as an example lol not similar at all

  • Sep 5, 2024

I think when trap started it's sorta like how flip phones died out, trap was just too infectious, it left ppl wanting more hype s*** or more crazy production, and lyrically it's more about smooth flows and punchlines than story telling or content

Idk about niggas rapping about the pyramids but the newer underground niggas that bar up still exist.

    Hit the Underground Renaissance thread.

If you f*** with Mike, you'll f*** with Mary Sue too.

It got bigger then went back to the underground

    Pinball out now

  • Sep 5, 2024

There's still a big audience for that lyrical s***. U got niggas like jid, cole, maybe jpegmafia doing well, the audience is there , but the industry don't support it. It's lowkey always been that way, the 90s was a fluke, the 2000s only backpack rappers were super lyrical, it was never meant to be the most popular form of hip hop. We need party music and jingles to sell records

You might be ignoring the trail.

If you f*** with Nas, Wu, The LOX, Mobb Deep, etc. You'll find a way to get to Griselda or even Action Bronson.

Griselda's original fan base were older rap heads. They didn't tap into a younger market until after they linked up with Eminem.

Older rap fans also gravitate towards Roc and Mach too.
