America is so centric. Other nations are not particularly concerned whether they break Mainstream US

Tbf sometimes we in turn also got that small island mentality which is another form of centrism (not just in music but thats a whole other debate)

    with respect completely disagree

even the mainstream grime back then was endearing cos it was so clear they were going pop , its obvious songs like Tinchy - Number One were going for a particular audience

now you have "grime MCs" like Stormzy or Skep or whatever doing watered grime and being marketted as pop, you cant tell whats authentic cos the entire scene is pop, no mixtapes no sets no dubs no clashes no real standout shows, obviously some exceptions but the state of the scene is dead and buried IMO

you are just talking about grime though. grime is dying.

  • Edna out now

UK hip hop will bring a new wave to the west in the early 2020s

Not exactly, maybe through the producers but the rappers, hell no lol.

Why are we acting like UK pop isn't still crossing over to America at a constant pace

Like Dua Lipa, Harry Styles, Lewis Capaldi, etc. all have had massive chart topping hits in the US in the last year, and Adele is rumoured to drop soon and that's gonna run US charts again

Most of those UK acts that crossed over had to relocate to the states and sign to American labels for their careers to globally pop off. UK rap acts are not doing that.

  • They wanna blow so they appeal to UK. They can’t blow if they don’t appeal to UK

  • Oct 10, 2020

Musically the scene is at its peak. There’s artists everywhere.

The problem is is the UK rap/drill/‘urban’ scene is so heavily populated that unless you’re signed to a label or promoted, you stand no chance of making a career, getting shows or making money from streaming, hence no international appeal.

It’s one of the worst things about the scene too as no one wants to work with each other. I’m in a collective with friends and I believe they could do big things but the way the scene operates just holds everyone back.

UK Hip-Hop brought back energy to the game after years of trap beats & hood blues rap.
