Persona
Sans Soleil
The Mirror
Persona has been my favorite movie ever since I first saw it maybe three-four years back, and it really brought me to watch a lot more foreign and older content in general. I've seen many great films since then, but Persona remains my #1. Though, with that being said, my appreciation for The Mirror has grown with each viewing.

I guess its cool to do a top5, 1-5:
Goodfellas
Reservoir Dogs
Trainspotting
Birdman
Apocalypse Now
the 6th would be Black Dynamite
@twitch Dr Strangelove is in my top 10 too, and Rashomon would be my favorite Kurosawa. I greatly enjoy most of his material, but don't have any single film ranked too high. My 2nd pick would be Ran
Yeah man Dr. Strangelove is gold and doesn’t get mentioned enough when ppl discuss Kubricks best movies. Everyone mostly says 2001 and Clockwork.
Rashomon Is amazing too. Honestly might do a movie marathon of Kurosawa because there’s a still a few I have to see still.
Thing I loved bout High and Low was how it switched perspectives halfway through but still keeps you engaged. Like the first half is spent finding the child then second half is spent finding the kidnapper.
real for high and low
Amazinggg film. I remember watching that and Bicycle Thieves a few years back and thought “so this is what the criterion hype is about ok ok”
Carrie
The burning
Putney swope
Clerks
Real for Putney Swope. They really let that nigga in off a “joke”

I saw High n Low during a Kurosawa marathon so the switch from historical/rural Japan to a contemporary urban environment was notable too. I appreciated how the modern architecture (especially the play with windows) and city design drove some of the conflict + investigating. Godly cinematography

Yessir 100%....I just love how versatile of a director he was. Able to go from historical pieces to more contemporary like you said. Legend.

Hard to put into words, but the film balances the weight of personal + national history very well. That play at scales, from the personal to the more culturally grandiose, makes it so that there’s always a great deal of both emotional and critical resonance.

I think I watched it 20 times in 2 months when I first watched it
Took me 15 views to realize he was gonna say buttfuck before he died too
Here I’ll give you my top 10:
Pulp fiction

Bicycle thieves
Goodfellas
The departed
Dark Knight
Empire strikes back
Do the right thing
Dr. Strangelove

Have you seen anything by the director, Andrei Tarkovsky?
It’s his shortest and most personal film, about memories from his childhood but also to a degree about Russian history (not that you have to be familiar- I’m not). It’s pretty dreamy, makes a lot of jumps across time, pretty strong example of “film as poetry” (helps that it features actual poetry being read- not all the time, but it’s a recurring motif)
