Didn’t read that s*** and I won’t, but I’m honestly on board with that idea as long as those kids don’t get deployed.

Regardless of your opinion on Israel, people who serve mandatory there aren't used the same way we ""use"" troops in the US.
They aren't simply deployed for ground troops, they're generally used for "national service", which sometimes includes community and/or public service, administration, infrastructure maintenance, etc. Only a small segment are actively used for direct military purposes. Alternatively, many get deferments (legally, not circumventing the service or something) for academic or volunteer organizations. If I was absolutely going to be forced to be conscripted I'd rather it be there than in the US.

What if mandatory service in the US functioned similar to Israel?

It's an unpopular opinion, but if there was a mass reform to the US and we stopped the DoD functioning from mercantile and imperialistically, I think this would be very beneficial. There's a large disconnect between culture and government right now mutually - government has no stake in the culture and people have no stake in culture, or any stake in the actions of the government besides having to live under it. What the government does is almost completely separate from people's actual lives, hence why horrible decisions can just happen. Removing these barriers I think would be beneficial, but admittedly this would be in a perfect world. It's hard when the US is so big and heterodox.

And I’m assuming mandatory service works better in Israel because people are connected through the culture more?

I think it's for a lot of reasons. I think, yeah, there's a genuine feeling of investment in country (even though this is sometimes a negative) - Israel is pretty nationalistic, and even though who aren't necessarily pro-"Israel" can see service as proactive for their individual communities since you aren't necessarily pushed into the IDF from my understanding. It also helps it's a small country though.

AmeriCorps isn't mandatory nor as ubiquitous in the US as the IDF is in Israel though. I'm not downplaying any good work AmeriCorps does, I just don't think it's comparable.

This is what he's suggesting though, not mandatory military conscription. I actually think this is one of his best policy ideas tbh

If we had both, that’d be good.
