Whether it be with stans on twitter or people on here and Reddit bringing up sales when it’s completely irrelevant. These types don’t even care if the music is good or not solely just concerned with their fav making more money off of them, it’s so bad to the point where there’s been fans basically becoming stream farms to get their faves a plaque (any nicki song, say so, savage, yummy, K-pop)
My question is when did this shift happen to where fans care so much about how much artists sell and use it to determine the quality of the art.
I was watching a video about Mj/Jermaine Jackson feud and they were clowning Jermaine jackson for only going gold or something and this was in 1979 🤷🏿♂️
i feel like with what u and @Mitchell said, labels have always cared about sales and thus artists. but like the people the fans when arguing
“We both sell records, well if you call what they do selling records. We sell a lot of records, and they sell a little” pac was disrespectful
It’s a form of coping mechanism for fans to fall back on when the music didn’t turn out good
The whole billboard debacle in 2018 probably brought more attention to it on social media since that's when fans started gaming the system heavily.
The sales battle with 50/Ye probably made it "okay" to focus on in a discussion
Tbh one of the better decisions of the site was to sticky the sales thread
Feel like it stopped being brought up in other threads unprompted
Also (mostly) cut down on people crying about sales talk
Stan culture blew up in 2013. So 2013+
People have been arguing about sales waaay before that lol
I don’t think there are a lot of people on this site that think more sales = higher quality I feel like that’s an extreme minority. I just think people love to argue for the sake of arguing a lot of the times lol

Yes but its been blown up to the levels it is today due to stan arguments.
op doesn’t even have a platinum thread i’m crine

I remember seeing all these people arguing and writing think pieces online about the bundles and streaming rules and was so confused the whole time
Probably around the time that mediocre rappers started selling crateloads of music but couldn't credibly defend themselves as the best in the game so they leaned on bragging about sales as a crutch
so like by 1990 at least

One day, everyone will take a step back and realize how much time and money they wasted on pointless arguments, accolades that aren't theres, and people they will never meet in real life just to feel like they won
