I've got to be in the top ~1% most extroverted people on the planet but I'm pretty sure baristas do not want to strike up idle chatter with customers. You should be kind and respectful when the opportunity arises though.
^ this is all that’s expected
As someone who works with the public we don’t want to have conversations. We want to do our job and be left alone .
Could not agree with you more.
People saying “those people do not want to talk to you” are projecting their own fear or anxiety of having unplanned conversations with others.
Humans thrive off human connections. Talk to someone. Maybe it leads to nothing, or maybe it brings someone the slightest bit of joy. Have no expectations on the other’s reaction - ask because you care and are interested.
no we aren’t projecting anything im one of the most extroverted people I know but my social life and my work life are two separate entities, most people hate their jobs and just want to get through it without some nauseatingly talkative person trying to strike up a conversation; especially when it’s busy
hiding behind your phone with airpods on instead of socializing is a waste of life, trust me
Facts
I’ve definitely hooked up with a couple girls that were bartending when I was younger. Good way to chat with a cutie if she isn’t slammed.
Some people might clown OP for this but he’s 100% right. Too many people walk around with their head down and their airpods in, miserable with no social skills.
Basic human interaction will make you happier. You don’t need to start asking people their life story, just literally say hello how are you.
Worst case, you get a “good” and you move on with your day. Best case, you may make a new friend or a career connection
A simple hey how are you doing is different from trying to start up a conversation with someone that’s just common politeness and decency. I’ll go out of my way to chat to old people at work as they may be lonely and may not have access to social media to chat with others. But randoms walking around with their AirPods in likely don’t want to talk anyway, and If they want to talk nonsense they can do that in their own time with their bros not mine.
moreso, if they strike conversation with you, engage with that. don’t assume they wanna talk all the time
Yeah your point is fine. I'm reading a book about this currently and there's a study where they found teenager's communication is truly shocking
I just find it disingenuous to "train your communication skills" on baristas
Like what are you training for;
Difficult conversations with friends? Lovers?
That next promotion negotiation?
Seems odd. You should just talk to people when you feel like it. They got glass skin: hey what's your routine? They got a nice band tee: love them, saw them last night, what did you think?
But this is phatic conversation. It's meaningless and passes the time. So it depends what you consider meaningful and good conversation to be
I'm not speaking to you on the job unless it's financially rewarding
Yeah i can see where you’re coming from, i just took it more as a “dont be afraid to talk to strangers” post
Was just going to add that complimenting someone is always a great way to start conversation too, literally everyone likes being complimented. Like hey sick jacket, where did you get it, nice shoes, wish i could have gotten those on skrs, stuff like that. You can find a lot of people with similar interests this way
hiding behind your phone with airpods on instead of socializing is a waste of life, trust me
So how about neither? Just stand there and wait for your coffee like a human being and if you want to talk then talk
If you dont then dont

You speaking for them all?? I worked in retail and talking to customers about whatever was the best part of my job. Meet new people and get paid for it.
It helped me stomach the s***ty pay and hours I worked.
i promise more often than not they don’t want to talk to you
Nah, they do not want to talk to you.
Starbucks psyop
Yup. Member since 2022 as well. Industry plants.
People in line behind you HATE this one SIMPLE trick! Click here to find out more!
if reading this post from OP is what compels you to actually start being social with people you are categorically f***ed
so....you got any hobbies?
Online contrarians are hilarious, just strike up convo if its natural and flowing and if not keep it moving
Ur not a weirdo for leaning towards one option or the other
i just go off them
sometimes it's clear someone open to a little chat, maybe they even start it, sometimes it's obvious they just wanna do they job in which case imma just keep it minimal but respectful
yall sum nerds itt fr

Yep, exactly.
I tell the starbies about what kinda dreams I had the prior night. Recently I’ve been trying to lucid dream to pretty much no success but I always have a great detailed explanation of how close I think I was to lucid dreaming to provide to a starbie
