i think every major artist hits a dip in the quality of their records and unfortunately i think this and american gangster are hovs, just imo tho i’m not experts
You don't like American Gangster? That's one of his best albums. We just gonna have to disagree on that one.
Revisited the other day. 10-12 great records, but so much filler. Way too bloated
That album would've been much better if Jay trimmed it down to the best 13-14 tracks from it.

100%

American Gangster slaps. Such a beautiful, cohesive project.

Def should have not been a double idk what they were thinking
Blueprint 1 if the stories are true part of the reason it was so great was because of how quick, focused & concised its process was & then they decide to do the exact opposite with part two
Blueprint 2
Blueprint 3
Kingdom Come
His bottom 3 imo & his only overall bad projects.
It seemed a lot worse than it actually was coming after one of the greatest rap albums of all time. Same thing happened with Vol 1 & Blueprint 2. Hip-hop fans think so black and white. Either an album is a classic or it’s trash. In reality it’s a solid Jay-Z project with a lot of gems.
Around this time his flow started getting clumsy (in comparison to Prime Hov) so this ended up being the 1st project where his timing was notably off so that made it seem really bad on first listen.
But even tho his flow wasn’t as on point as it once was it was still elite and the content was hella substantive. Tracks like “Lost Ones”, “Do You Wanna Ride”, “30 Something”, “Minority Report”, “Beach Chair”, etc all had interesting concepts and thought provoking content. It’s easily his 2nd most mature body of work right behind 4:44 which kinda makes it unique to his discog. The beats were solid too, very well produced album. That being said “Anything” is unforgivable. “Hollywood” isn’t as bad as some say but it’s easily the Carter’s worst collab. That hook on “Dig a Hole” is laughably bad.
If I had to score it give it a 7.0, maybe 7.5
I’m always pleasantly surprised when I revisit it. The fact that an album this good is bottom tier in his discog says a lot about how great he is tbh
It's the first Hov album I remember my dad playing in the whip so it has that hold on me but it's not one of his bests
one of his worst but has it's highlights. supposedly the original version got dropped in the ocean on a trip to the bahamas and he had to make a new album
Show me what you got is classic
having said that, id just rather do the Weezy version every single time.
Blueprint 2
Blueprint 3
Kingdom Come
His bottom 3 imo & his only overall bad projects.
I'd put Magna in his bottom 3 before Kingdom Come personally.
I always had soft spots for Oh My God and Beach Chair
Oh My God and Kingdom Come are dope tracks. Beach Chair and Minority Report are classic.

Whaaat that would be crazy lol

So many bad and unnecessary songs on BP2. The highs are really high, and the lows are really low.
It’s forgettable. Anyone who says it’s a good album is trying to be a contrarian

I think Magna is decent/mediocre but I dont think its mostly bad overall
I respect that tho, would be bottom 5 along with Dynasty imo. Two albums of his that I think are middle of the road.
Not a bad album but didn’t feel like a Jay album. Hard to explain.
