if he cut a few songs it would've aged much better than it did regardless of the reception it got at the time. I think its almost like Drake's VIEWS, the hype was so high that it would've been perceived as underwhelming pretty much regardless of what he put out. Jay-Z needed Kingdom Come as a detour so he could refine what he wanted to do for the future of his career. like someone else said ITT it's a grown man album. Minority Report is amazing to this day.

Agreed on all counts. The album is much better with Hollywood and Anything cut. Minority Report is a classic!

Damn, not a fan of Minority Report or Beach Chair?

Beach Chair is def fire too I forgot

The highs on KC not really my favorite Hov records though, excluding Lost One and I’ll run Prelude here and there bc I like the vibe

He wasted a lot of those beats with them geriatric flows fr lol

30 Something and I Made It fire too

The latter could fit right in on BP1. Very underrated song of his.

30 Something is midlife crisis rap lmao niggas was calling him old back then and he was hurt

I Made It is cool, def had that BP feel to it. Not a super strong record but I’m not mad at it

I'm a major old school hip-hop head and I just feel like VOL2 forced way too many mainstream records.

I'm surprised how many people like it better than Vol. 1.. Imaginary Players, Streets is Watching and A Million & One Questions destroy pretty much everything on VOL2

If it wasn’t for the commercial success he achieved with that album he wouldn’t be the goat he is today bro. Paved the way for more commercial Jay-Z albums like Vol 3, BP2, BP3, WTT, Magna Carter, Everything is Love etc. Are those album as good as Reasonable Doubt? Hell no but at the same time Jay would be a boring ass artist without them. Just a dope as rapper with no balance like most of these niggas. He wouldn’t have lasted half as long if he ain’t reach for that commercial sound you talking about. I think he intentionally released serious albums followed by commercial/fun albums to maintain longevity. Best strategy imo. Kanye and Kendrick burned out trying to deliver classics every time while Drake albums ultimately never get acclaim because of his please everyone approach on every album.

I agree that VOL2 absolutely moved the needle forward, which is GREAT news in the long run, but it doesn't mean it's a quality album from a music aspect.
