I've always wondered why there isn't more asians making it big in the music industry.
Interesting topic tbh, in sports id say a lot of American sports seem to require above average build and height for real success, and on average Asians are less likely to meet that criteria.
Not so sure about entertainment tho, is it just that these career paths are seen as less viable and culturally kids are dissuaded by parents from pursuing them?
There’s a similar thing with football (soccer) here in the U.K. Asians (of Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi heritage) are by far an away the largest non white immigrant group here, and many live in working class areas which are traditionally hotbeds for young football talent.
However there’s something crazy like only 1 or 2 people fully from this background (i.e. excluding mixed race white/Indians) have ever played at the top level, and there’s only a tiny amount of people from this background who’ve ever played professionally.
Conversely black British players of both Caribbean and African descent are probably statistically really over represented in football compared to the general pop.
Would be an interesting topic for a dissertation
They’re steadily becoming more prevalent in media and music now more than ever
A ton of absurdly popular youtubers/social media personalities are asian too
I've lived in 5 counties so far, I've legit never seen Asian people be out there like that.
Not even as street performers.
lmao american middle eastern people are

Wait do we mean asian as the continent, or asian as in Chinese, Japanese, Korean

Isn't it a language barrier?
If you ignore K/J/C Pop, you still have Yaeji, Rina Sawayama and Stephanie Poetri who are bubbling.
I'm not American but far as music goes early Youtube up until late 2010s was filled with corny dudes like Timothy DeLaGhetto and Lil Crazed. Quite a few instrumentalists and producers throughout different genres but never the frontman.
Actors, like most minorities, are usually typecast (seductive woman, martial artist, grocery shop owners, nerd)
Not too many western born asians were making it in sports or choose it as a career path, culturally the asian immigrant parent discourages that type of thing, treating it as a risk.
I think another important thing is that quite frankly there's no real subculture born out of the western asian identity the media/public can latch on to and call it cool.
The closest I can think of is the JDM subculture in the early 00s/late 90s, amplified by Tokyo Drift. Han is probably one of the few 'cool' asians represented in Hollywood lol. Even then, JDM is basically being a weaboo for cars and not a home grown thing
Btw check out the movie Better Luck Tomorrow

Yeah they're thriving and have a pretty large fanbase but they're far from being really mainstream like many white, hispanic or black pop stars.
Xenophobia and Asians are the most casually discriminated against group in America. This was all true even before covid 19. Now it’ll be worse.
On a side note I don't think it's a legitimate issue to be worried about, like other ppl in this thread have said, they're steadily on the rise and become acceptable as the 'faces' of brands, businesses and entertainment.
Part of the 'fix' is a numbers game on people choosing to pursue careers in culturally relevant fields and being genuine to themselves (plus becoming successful), not necessarily playing towards an inorganic asian-american identity.
The only places I feel that need to be actively fixed are instances of poor representation and information causing ignorance towards asians in general such as attacks produced by COVID-19 fears, but that point applies to any race/ethnicity.
