In 2010-2012 Nicki had major pop smashes with Moment 4 Life, Super Bass, and Starships. Then for some reason she just stopped making these types of records. She had success with a more traditional rap record with Anaconda but after that she went six years without another top five hit.
Then Doja comes along and becomes a superstar using the same formula Nicki did in the early 2010s. The type of success Nicki could've continued to have had she just kept making this type of music.
The only thing I can come up with is that the allure to be considered a "real rapper" is too great. We're seeing the same thing happen to Doja currently.
Because she cares too much what other people think of her so she wanted to keep up the facade of Best female rapper
Didn’t she say she was afraid of losing her rap credibility? @dedication

She also seems to care a lot about the charts as well. I figured she would keep making the music that was proven to work best in that arena. I guess you can't do both.

yeah she has deep rooted insecurity issues. her fanbase amplifies it as well

then why did she drop horrible rap albums like Queen
then why did she drop horrible rap albums like Queen
it wasn't horrible so... idk what u listened to
she still makes pop and r&b songs. They just haven't gotten pushed as singles.
moment 4 life isn't even pop

Did drake lose his
then why did she drop horrible rap albums like Queen
Her production choices have been wack for a while, which doesn't help. She used to get really weird cutting edge beats like Stupid Hoe and Beez in the Trap but this vaguely trap pop rap s*** ain't it

Why is top 5 the basis for it? Also charting is different streaming era vs prestreaming era.
Charting also depends on who else is dropping.
Songs can go top 20 and be just as big as top 5s.
Also she had multiple 5s and top 10s...
Queens lead single chun li went #10 after dropping on a thursday week before(still charted) so if she dropped it on friday probably would've been top 5 anyway.

Well it has her singing a hook which she's rarely done on her singles since Roman Reloaded.
Anaconda, Only, Truffle Butter, Chun-Li, Barbie Dreams...these are way less pop than a song like Moment 4 Life
Also isn't the entire point of making pop songs as a rapper for it to be pushed as a single? You do one or two for the radio and then cater the rest of the album to your core fans
because she doesnt have to. Only loser rappers have to feature taylor swift sza rihanna

there are many examples of her singing the hook. Genuinely think you should relisten to pinkprint and queen..
Lots of rappers make pop and r&b songs and dont push them as singles
Why cant an artist just do what they want after theyve accomplished everything? I respect that about people like Nicki, Doja or even like a Mac Miller. Artists goals change.
They did the opposite (yes i know nicki was also a hardcore rapper in the underground but for the sake of brevity follow me): go pop - then go "real rap", then, in macs case, go "art rap" after which is even more further down the line and alienating/niche on a mainstream level. You can even say Kendrick & Kanye is apart of this group and "trojan horse" act too - in some ways. Theyre just one of the few that still keep mainstream eyes on them while not really being mainstream anymore.
While most artists "sell out" - start from "art/real" rap to then pop.
Why would you want more pop when the artist has achived high levels of mainstream success for years? Why cant an artist after being widely known and more than finacially stable can just now coast & do literally what they truly want?
They already achived what pop and mainstream can & is suppose do for them ten fold.
She got bullied for it and stopped doing them.
This was the reason why.
It was up with Hot 97 after that. Ebro wasn't on the air yet and was behind the scenes and had to jump in, Flex had to jump in and it destroyed the relationship the station had with her.
But after this she put out Lookin Ass Nigga. Now she'll only do a feature here and there.
