OVHoe FreightIn 2010-2012 Nicki had major pop smashes with Moment 4 Life, Super Bass, and Starships. Then for some reason she just stopped making these types of records. She had success with a more traditional rap record with Anaconda but after that she went six years without another top five hit.
Then Doja comes along and becomes a superstar using the same formula Nicki did in the early 2010s. The type of success Nicki could've continued to have had she just kept making this type of music.
The only thing I can come up with is that the allure to be considered a "real rapper" is too great. We're seeing the same thing happen to Doja currently.
Nicki herself came out and said she hated most of those hyper-pop songs because even she knows there was very little artistic merit to them. Yes, they were huge hits that did wonders for her career but she wouldn't consider them some of her best songs or even average songs and that's the point.
I feel like the same thing applies with Doja Cat. Like yes, those songs are great and they're ear candy and they become monster hits but any artist who cares deeply about their art/is a real hip-hop head will always want to make stuff with more artistic merit or at least find a line where they can make stuff that's catchy and can work on radio but is still decent enough of a record to pass as some hard rap s***.

The singles for Queen were good at least. Oh wait no they weren’t, Chun Li was the only bop. and ganja burns the only other good album song.
The rest was embarrassing cries for attention, it didnt help it coincided with that Queen radio podcast where she went on manic rants 24/7 and dropped flex bombs to her 17 year old fanbase that has no clue who Flex is and think she a genius for inventing it
Maybe its my personal NY bias…

Doja Cat just got tired of having Dr. Luke write all her hooks at the label’s hand on Planet Her lol. I’m sure she enjoys the money, but doja was an independent artist for a LONG ass time
