i dont see the problem cuz its different writers

that creates a whole new problem when having different writers for all kinds of albums knowing not everyone will think of it the same way

i doubt it tbh, that'd be way too annoying to marry the writer's review to a majority score

pretty sure the staff does decide

    that sounds vaguely familiar

i get what youre saying but also totally possible to genuinely change an opinion, especially when its something that might have confused people at first

i suppose but it's pretty transparent when it's just to keep up with current trends in critical reappraisal lol

A little background: Pitchfork rates submissions on a scale of 0 to 10, 10 being the highest score possible. Multiple employees all submit what they feel is the score and they take an average of all employee reviews and that becomes the score. They also vote on whether or not it should get 'Best New Music' distinction.

Explains the random scores like 7.46 or whatever

f***ing hate this set-up lol, would much rather just follow individual critics then a website that just melt down what the whole staff thinks.

Some criticism is warranted in a constructive manner but ppl tend to be crazy negative and disrespectful when giving criticism. Instead of “this album just ain’t for me”, it’s “this s*** is TRASH”. I think as a fan who spends money on an artist’s art and buys merch and invest in them, they have every right to give an opinion on the music but ppl take it too far. Plus ppl just love to criticize and mainly focus on stuff they don’t even like. Weirdos.

Again, if they don't even understand the point of the music, how the f*** can they provide value? Having an opinion isn't inherently valuable the same way having an opinion isn't inherently useless. It's important to learn first before you criticize something. What's the reason people use the phrase "real rap fans" "casual fans"? What's the reason why sometimes people bring up "well he's white" so I get it. All these questions are often valid.

The thing about music as an art form just like any other is that it can be interpreted in multiple ways. The point of a song or album for you will be different than the creator intended or how other people take it in. There's whatever point you want there to be.

People who call out "real rap fans" or "casual fans" are simply gatekeeping, which is toxic and hurts everyone and the genre more than they think it helps. It's how you stay stagnant and never progress further and grow.

its always funny to encounter ppl who say s*** like "i dont like critics" and then within the next like 20 seconds say an artist is trash and sucks

thats kinda cool though, no? you actually get a non-biased pov independent from one particular writer. I feel like this is a perfect setup from an editorial standpoint

    but having opinions isn't
    the same as criticizing

    we should have healthy debates

but criticizing art is wrong to me

I agree. Like we can have a healthy debate. It doesn’t have to be “this s*** is trash” if an artist’s music doesn’t do it for you. It’s ok just to be like “I’m good” and keep it moving

    another point that is important

    we have to retrain ourselves

i have become very mindful of what i say

because as i continue to grow i continue to understand more of what our favorites have been going through

i am working on a book
about what it's like to be an artist

and i think this topic is important

    i have no problems
    with people not liking art

but i do have a problem
    with people profiting from
    tearing apart people's hearts

i know that i'm painting this idealistically

    but truly

if an artist pours themselves into something

i do not believe a critic should then criticize it

i'm not saying they have to like it

but reviews like Blue Slide Park and Camp

    are over the line

    that's what i'm focusing on

    also the narratives that
    come with the criticisms

    let's look at nas

he's dealt with that a lot

    why?

    critics

    narratives

If you can profit off of art then people can profit off their opinion of art lol.

We're paying for something they are deliberately sharing & thinking its a worthwhile piece to sell.

As a buyer & a consumer, we have the right to say if we think what you're trying to sell is worth it or not.

Consumer's only power is literally their opinion, & critics crtiques are more for the people than anything, from their perspective.

A critic is just an opinion that has more eyes on it, & literally its the everyday person that gives them this power & any meaning.

Also, lets not act like critics are just saying s*** to say s***. To the average person they respect that most of them seem to have more thought, experience & knowledge on the subject, & mainly the average person likes how they have an effective & clear way to describe how they feel & their answers for the hows, whys & becauses of their feelings. Which a good amount of people arent good at & why they admire those that are. This goes beyond critics to things such as leaders, preachers, book authors etc.

Art has literally been criticized longer than recorded writing, & its the everyday man that props the critic up.

If you dont like it, cool, but it does have its purpose, point & reason, & there are tons of people & even artists themselves that do like & want it.

And to me, that want is valid.
