Art would be very boring if you couldn't talk about it or if it didn't inspire thought. Criticism should be a way to help understand things, not just "hating" or loving something
Well you cant have it both ways. Most genres are cultured anyway. Modern black music isnt the only form of culture in music
I mean bruh I'm not Korean but I listen to K-Pop music. I'm not white but I listen to Mort Garrison. I'm not a woman but I listen to Willow.
That's not a proper barrier. Everyone can recognize music and if they f*** with it or not. And it's actually interesting to see how music is evaluated across cultures imo
The same applies to other genres. It would be dumb for some asian kid to be a critic on country music.
This is straight up racism, yall niggas are crazy af in this thread
It's healthy to get outside opinions because those are always the most unbiased. You want niggas saying the same thing all the time?
i have repeatedly said i don't want to silence critique or discussion
but the basis of my argument is
you can critique something
without criticizing
ok dis LSD semiotics
This is straight up racism, yall niggas are crazy af in this thread

yeah that was a weird post for sure
also what i'm getting at
there has to be some level of credibility before you have the authority to even speak about an album
imo
like who are you to review Jay-Z and Nas
Which is why I dont take rap critics or rnb critics seriously.
You don't have to like everything of course, but being so outward in disliking something is obviously very performative, whereas enjoying something is often more personal and sincere
For the most part yes but someone might feel that some artist or work represents the exact opposite of what they stand for and then they react strongly in a negative way
It's the same with politics and whatever bro
idk, i feel like people/critics should be able to say what they really feel about a piece of art without worrying about whether it could hurt the artists' feelings. but it can definitely be corny/lame/unhelpful to review things negatively in a certain way. i think the point of music journalism should more be to recommend music to people rather than s***ting on it in a way that gets the most clicks and controversy
what do you mean the Blue Side Park and Camp reviews? any excerpts? i havent heard those albums in full or read anything really
we are aligned
one sec
i'll try to find them
You don't have to like everything of course, but being so outward in disliking something is obviously very performative, whereas enjoying something is often more personal and sincere
yall put so much stock into fantano opinions even when he tells you not to its insane
Fantano got niggas turning music into 1984
I mean bruh I'm not Korean but I listen to K-Pop music. I'm not white but I listen to Mort Garrison. I'm not a woman but I listen to Willow.

Again, you cant have it both ways. Seems no1 had a problem when it came to hip-hop but when it comes to other genres all of a sudden it's "wait i want a voice here"
Camp deserved being s*** on. That album is horrendous and downright offensive and racist ins several different ways
i don't because i don't care
but it's clear he has an influence
that's undeniable
thats a moot point because anybody with an opinion can be an influence on anything out there. id say that even if people want to parrot others opinions -- let them? you can recognize they're not coming from the genuine place but really you might just keep it to yourself. kinda going against your own logic here I feel like
that's the point i was leading toward
i think it's time we actively fight against music critics
what is even the point anymore
if anything, the narratives created can warp how people perceive the music
it's nasty
especially when the critic isn't writing from a pure space
I agree with u entirely
that's what i'm saying - you cant
But that's why it's entertainment. Cus you can say whatever you want but none of that actually affects what is actually happening
It's just people discussing what they think is finna, or did happen. Cus we can't control what happens on the court. There's nothing for us to do but talk about that s***. But if niggas didn't talk about basketball, there would be no NBA to begin with
This is straight up racism, yall niggas are crazy af in this thread

It's not racism to suggest people from different cultures may not be able to accurately assess music from different cultures. I wouldn't expect some nigga from Alaska to get why African beats are popular.
Again, you cant have it both ways. Seems no1 had a problem when it came to hip-hop but when it comes to other genres all of a sudden it's "wait i want a voice here"
Idk what you mean.
You don't have to like everything of course, but being so outward in disliking something is obviously very performative, whereas enjoying something is often more personal and sincere
facts
also part of why i dont really pay attention to negative crticism as much as positive. i want to be recommended music based on people's descriptions of why they like it so much. i dont care as much about reasons why a critic might dislike something. and i feel like a lot of the time the negative critic is more performative like you said with the intention of entertaining the listener/reader by tearing something down
I've seen ppl on the Internet thinking what would Fantano think and basing their opinion on that tho lmaoo
Like Jorja Smith - "she's not experimental enough", basically they want her to make more abrasive and noisy music with that typical weird art hoe angle so someone like Fantano would find it more appealing.. I've seen this argument plenty of times on KTT and outside of it
The same applies to other genres. It would be dumb for some asian kid to be a critic on country music.
say that again
Camp deserved being s*** on. That album is horrendous and downright offensive and racist ins several different ways
what bits are racist?
it definitely is corny but
there is some charm to it too
imo
Curating because theres too much music and some people don’t have time to develop taste by digging themselves
Curating because theres too much music and some people don’t have time to develop taste by digging themselves
The industry really won
