the defining characteristic of art is that it can be critiqued. its inherently anti-authoritarian
somebody said that already p1 but its all good
Honestly, I think today's critics are too easy on artists if anything. Everything gets a 7 or above

i want this to be true
but i feel like a fantano review disproves this
and that's kind of my point

Yeah if we can't even dissect music or discuss in any way that someone may perceive as negative then we're literally mindless drones who can only consume and never actually digest

Yeah bc those publications need to maintain their industry ties to keep functioning
Pitchfork are gonna need that Cardi B interview or her to be lined up on their next festival or whatever

what if everything is a 7 or above in their eyes?
y'all remember in ratatouille when the critic was burying restaurants with his reviews?
that's what i'm getting at
Most critics are biased or ridiculously lame anyway when it comes to s*** they dont get. You shouldn't be allowed to critique rap and rnb if you dont come from the same origins unless you prove to be a valid critic. Which most don't.
The same applies to other genres. It would be dumb for some asian kid to be a critic on country music.

I won't go this far.

yall put so much stock into fantano opinions even when he tells you not to its insane
i have no problems
with people not liking art
but i do have a problem
with people profiting from
tearing apart people's hearts
i know that i'm painting this idealistically
but truly
if an artist pours themselves into something
i do not believe a critic should then criticize it
i'm not saying they have to like it
but reviews like Blue Slide Park and Camp
are over the line
that's what i'm focusing on
also the narratives that
come with the criticisms
let's look at nas
he's dealt with that a lot
why?
critics
narratives
idk, i feel like people/critics should be able to say what they really feel about a piece of art without worrying about whether it could hurt the artists' feelings. but it can definitely be corny/lame/unhelpful to review things negatively in a certain way. i think the point of music journalism should more be to recommend music to people rather than s***ting on it in a way that gets the most clicks and controversy
what do you mean the Blue Side Park and Camp reviews? any excerpts? i havent heard those albums in full or read anything really

there has to be some level of credibility before you have the authority to even speak about an album
imo
like who are you to review Jay-Z and Nas
Art would be very boring if you couldn't talk about it or if it didn't inspire thought. Criticism should be a way to help understand things, not just "hating" or loving something

You realize the thing about opinions is you can just simply ignore them, right? That's what most people do which is toxic but you're going a step further and come off as wanting to silence them. That's a disturbing thought
I won't go this far.
Well you cant have it both ways. Most genres are cultured anyway. Modern black music isnt the only form of culture in music
The same applies to other genres. It would be dumb for some asian kid to be a critic on country music.
that's a weird thing to say

i don't because i don't care
but it's clear he has an influence
that's undeniable

You can say that about anything if you want to. How can I say LeBron James is fye if I never played basketball

i have repeatedly said i don't want to silence critique or discussion
but the basis of my argument is
you can critique something
without criticizing
that's a weird thing to say
Stereotypes.. even if there's a correlation/probability it doesn't mean there aren't outliers and exceptions to the rule

that's what i'm saying - you cant
