Today I want to talk about the corny phenomenon on KTT where if you try to discuss 90's hip hop albums (and I'm talking about critically acclaimed, high selling, extremely influential CLASSICS) there'll always be some a******s who'll just write them off as "dust lmao" and derail the thread then dip. It even happens with 00's albums sometimes.
Then a few threads later you see the same fkn a******s taking pride in knowing 60's-80's rock acts that are sometimes even older than their own dad, like The Beach Boys for example (and I mean no disrespect, yes Pet Sounds is a classic but so are Illmatic, 36 Chambers, Midnight Marauders, The Infamous, The Chronic, Death Certificate, Reasonable Doubt and so on). Wtf??
Sonic Youth is my fav band but I even noticed a few posters pretending to like them just bc they saw them on RYM lists and think it'd make them seem like "hip intellectuals", like those French hipster dudes from old black & white movies. But when I try to have an actual conversation about their music those posters just disappear without quoting back.
they have no original thoughts and parrot whatever anthony fantano, pitchfork, thefader, rateyourmusic, and whatever lists they discovered that makes them feel "cool, unique and deep"
because illmaic is dust and i love the beachy boys influence on the modern soundscape of America with their use of effects and lyricism.

F*** you
1) they just dont like it
2) liking old white people music makes you seem cultured and attuned
3) they’re trolling
4) they’re stupid
any combo of the above

Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine were literally influenced by Public Enemy

honestly this is a hiphop forum but it's the whole age old
rap is crap bullshit.
where people don't take the time to understand a genre except for the current "bangers" and then listen to other s*** they don't even like to get a sense of heritage/familiarity.
pro tip : those guys don't even listen to rock bands in those decades and have no history on that genre either.
dadrock in 2020
its because rap is the most popular genre rn
but if ever catching someone saying three 6 mafia is dust on ktt he needs to be banned on here

tbf i think a lot of older hip hop just doesn't age as well as some of the rock music stuff
its mainly the production that i think makes a lot of older hip hop records sound stale to some ppl in comparison to the rock music of that era
ofc not to generalize a whole era but i think that's what it comes down to plus a lot of these hip hop album are also just super long, unnecessarily prolonged by skits and interludes while most rock albums have a nice 40 min mark cut off thus making it easier to take in and digest for people. (again not all rock albums, but its a more common thing to happen in rock music than in hip hop)
but the whole dust argument is still dumb and probably stems from immaturity.
but maybe I'm just rambling who knows.

Idk man I think that older hip hop albums have managed to capture such a special atmosphere that simply cannot be remade today. You listen to Ready to Die and Liquid Swords and you really get the feeling of a rainy day in the city and the sense of paranoia and distrust hit you like a brick.
