but are those 90s hip hop albums mentioned in op not also highly regarded by anthony fantano, pitchfork, thefader and rateyourmusic

    i don't think so

most boombap is dismissed as derivative or simplistic and the actual bars aren't appreciated anymore

just looked at the rym 100 albums of all time and it's 2 wu tang albums and nas and a tribe called quest

and i wouldn't even consider most wu tang to fit in with any of that s*** because of how original it was for the time thematically and musically. the same hipster weirdos that listen to carti or thug would stan wu-tang today

that's why someone like fantano looooves wutang becuse it's "so kewl and unique"

as someone who grew up during this boom in music critique you can see what type of music is prioritized by the intelligentsia

tbf i think a lot of older hip hop just doesn't age as well as some of the rock music stuff

its mainly the production that i think makes a lot of older hip hop records sound stale to some ppl in comparison to the rock music of that era

ofc not to generalize a whole era but i think that's what it comes down to plus a lot of these hip hop album are also just super long, unnecessarily prolonged by skits and interludes while most rock albums have a nice 40 min mark cut off thus making it easier to take in and digest for people. (again not all rock albums, but its a more common thing to happen in rock music than in hip hop)

but the whole dust argument is still dumb and probably stems from immaturity.

but maybe I'm just rambling who knows.

you are indeed rambling im afraid

    Cuz white

90s hip-hop doesn't have enough "poppy" or "musical" elements for their tastes

I’ve seen so many people say only white people like 90s hip hop still, and now people are saying white people don’t like 90s hip hop because it’s not musical enough

KTT can never make up its mind about white preferences lmao

I love 90s hip hop, a lot of it sounds so raw and authentic

Early mobb deep, Nas, Wu Tang, Gangstarr, Big L, I could go on

  • Feb 22, 2020

Yo I remember David making a similar statement a while ago. It’s pretty weird to stan old rock (I’m a huge fan btw) and not like old hip hop. Like I like all old music so calling a specific genre dust wouldn’t even make sense

  • They weirdos tbh and they're just mad that rock music hasn't been interesting or as good as it was since the 60s-80s, while hip-hop has been good since the 90s and has only gotten progressively better and more interesting.

Don’t mock any of the sub genres but personally I love older rock music but somehow never got into 90’s hip hop. I think rap albums from those times periods were just not musically complex enough (imo) and the vocals were fairly difficult to pick up. Of course I’ll still respect the legends from that time period, but their music just isn’t for me after all

I agree with this when it comes to a lot of 80s hip hop albums but the albums that OP listed should not be included in that. Those albums have remained timeless imo and it’s annoying to see them get bashed on here

i think there was just this big shift in how people consume music nowadays compared to even like 10 years ago when kendrick and all them came up...it felt more organic
ppl appreciated it more but now idk you would think with streaming making it easier than ever to get access to all the old s*** ppl would go back a lil more, and yea some do but most just rather stream the same 3 songs from the same 3 artists all day lol

idk back then there was something rare about it ig now its just dust to most.

I’m telling y’all, s*** changed a lot in 2016 and due to streaming. We gotta have a discussion on this cause you even see how Pitchwork switched up on certain types of albums in favor for giving albums like Invasion of Privacy 8.7s and s*** lol

  • Feb 22, 2020

Jay Kay from Jamiroquai looking good

  • Cause they’re racists who don’t truly care about hip hop culture

I'm guessing that's more the Conde Nast takeover but I can't be certain

think most people ive seen that dont care about 90s rap also just dont care about old music in general
