but fanbases listen regardless of quality because they like the ambiance. The same way friends had a lot of seasons but isnt funny same with frasier

    same with simpsons still
    ridiculousness

    cops

    the list goes on

Lol I don’t disagree with you on a personal taste level, I just personally would feel arrogant saying “this show objectively isn’t funny” and effectively meaning that anyone who likes that likes unfunny shows. I don’t hold my opinion to be that high.

But you don’t think a visual element can be a part of the music? I think pop music especially relies on the music being paired with a visual aesthetic and I don’t think that’s bad. I just thinks that’s a part of the genre.

true and, well, is that not part of the quality of the art then?

if people are buying things based off of their enjoyment of that non-audio aesthetic factor, then there is a link between "sales" and "quality (subjectively determined)"

See this is what I believe. I don’t like Taylor Swift at all, but I think I’d look crazy to suggest that in her lane, she’s not one of the best at what she does even if it’s not meant for me

    I 100% agree w/ you.

We should be saying Not meant for me doesn't equal bad.

It's not good music unless it's super popular and can function as inoffensive background music at the mall

its not objectively true. I am saying same reason office seinfeld successful we like the world they already built

its much easier to listen to a drake or kanye 8th or 9th album than some new rappers first and try to get to know them

Is "Transformers" better than "The Godfather"?

I don’t personally like either, but seeing as 1 was made with kids in mind, I feel weird saying kids have bad taste because Godfather wouldn’t hold their interest lol. These two movies are made for entirely different audiences

because great marketing doesn't equal great quality of the product.. this is an issue across all businesses and products, not just music.

I think most people would agree that music is subjective, so why is there such push back on the idea that sales mean a large number of people enjoy someone’s work? I don’t think this means that if 1 artist sells more than another, it means their project is “better.” But that’s rarely the conversation. Typically people make the quality statement when they don’t personally enjoy someone’s work despite it being successful.

I think it’s more accurate to say low sales don’t equal low quality, because some things aren’t as available or made to be embraced by every possible audience.

    Fam stop

Yea but reminder that I’m only arguing that high sales should have merit. Low sales should not equal low quality because there are a thousand reasons why something does sell well. I just think, for random example, that saying Kid Laori is objectively trash just because I don’t personally like him, is a fair when the world clearly enjoys his music. At that point, his music just isn’t for me and that’s okay but my opinion shouldn’t matter more than the millions that fux with him

Music all costs the same for someone to listen. How do you compare that to Burgers lol.

even if food was uniform in cost a lot of people would still buy mcdonalds because fast food is addictive and easily digestible

less would buy it for sure, which is part of why poverty causes obesity, but a whopper is still outselling your vegan kale salad

Why does this need to be explained on a site like this lmao. Shocking

Because sales can just as likely be driven by temporary hype, image, marketing, and "hot for the moment" trends as the actual music.

Bodak Yellow and Old Town Road are Diamond based on the hype that Cardi/LNX had but how many people are looking back at them as classic/timeless songs that can be enjoyed for generations?

Radiohead never sold too well but their legacy is more in tact than Nickelback who sold more than them on one album.

Sales shouldn't be discounted so much either but there has to be a balance to determine quality.

I feel you but i dont really see people at least on here trying to say stuff is objectively bad. Cause what even is objectively bad music?

Like if someone said Adeles music was trash thats just their opinon and how they feel about the music.

Sales has no correlation with quality of music

It is however correlated with quality of marketing, branding, and business
