Always thought the implication of it was like shooting yourself in the foot. It’s basically suggesting that white men are more cultured and intelligent about art while other demographics are “too stupid and close minded” to get it.

it basically is, but no one in here wants to admit it

I've seen people say MF Doom is "white people" music too which is funny because he'll often thrown in Five Percenter slang in many of his raps lol.

That style of music just isn’t appealing to the average black listener in the USA. That doesn’t make it worse or better though

black people have always made “experimental” music, out existance demands that we are constantly reinventing ourselves and everything around us

i think that kinda music gets called yt ppl music for so many reasons that i can’t even get into it rn or else i’ll give myself a headache, but basically i think it’s bc

if we’re talking modern right, i think yt artists have to “do more” to craft a sense of individuality, hence some ppl see some music as weird for the sake of being weird / different.

if to be black in america still technically is a deviation of the “cultural standard”, then it’s much easier for critics to homogenize / lump black artists together, while still highlighting their individuality. idk if i’m making sense or wording this the right way.

i think it has a lot to do with the racialization of genre tho more than anything

    Like me for example.

Sometimes I wanna hear the crickets.

  • deleteduser579

is anyone in here going to explain why?

Idk this would get into a cultural/racial discussion of what black people listen to VS white people. Then that would exclude a lot of people out of that convo including myself

I mean yea I guess I see what what you mean, but tbh I feel like a lot of us in black community don’t give certain music a fair chance because of the “white boy” stigma that comes with it

And it’s just wild how a white dude can blast trap music loud af and no one really gives it much attention, but a black dude listening to alternative or something is def going to cause him to get stuck with labels

It just really sucks that black people are the only ones that gotta deal with something like that
