it may be how the term is used in certain circles (i assume its just with professional singing type stuff since thats all i can really find) but it is absolutely not how the term is used in common speech. where vocalist = person who performs vocals

and like i was kinda saying earlier a distinction between the 2 terms is that there are different types of musical vocals besides just singing that people include under the word vocalist

at this point, it's starting to fan out into a sea of pedantic-ism in general and i don't really care lmao

we are not gonna start calling Thug and Future "vocalists" to be all cutesy and inclusive, it's insulting for other people who actually studied under a vocal coach and took lessons honing their voice for them to even be placed in the same class as them, it isn't the same thing dude. if you think it is and want to retcon the term for your own personal usage so be it, im just saying that's not how it's actually used in industrial and professional circles

its not about being cutesy and inclusive, its about using the definition of the word

we are not in a professional circle right now so I do not see the point to try to make that distinction (whoever originally brought it up) instead of using the definition thats good enough for Wikipedia. show me one definition used in a non-classical singing training that distinguishes vocalist from singer by saying that vocalist has to be classically trained. your definition is not the universal one used in every context

btw i hope you actually are laughing out loud a lot because you keep using laugh emojis and saying lmao like every post

this is the second time you have commented on the way i write @RVI im insecure enough alone nigga

again, vocalist and singers are discerned by who is classically trained and who is not in professional and music circles. im not saying you can't use the word how you want to or how it's "commonly" applied, if we are discussing music, and you say "X artist is a vocalist, rapper, singer" i take vocalist as in they actually studied and went through lessons to train their vocals down to technical perfection, it was never a catch-all term

im just saying it would be wrong, and it's being solely used to prop up people's favorite artists because they are insecure about the music they like and feel the need to blow it up by adopting terms that are usually used in a completely different way

you keep just trying to state your opinion as a fact, show me some proof that is what discerns them that I can pit against dozens of dictionary definitions and millions of music discussion posts online. or else theres nothing to converse about because you just repeat what you claim to be the objective way that the words are distinguished

no comment on the last part i think i agree with some cases of that

i comment on the way you were writing because i think its funny when people say "lol' or "lmao" over and over when they are just sitting blank faced on the phone/computer lol. pretty obviously nothing to take personal

Yeah it looks like the distinction is in singing communities/teaching type stuff. Even in that Quora link there are people disagreeing though. I think even music hobbyists or no singers are gonna end up confused sometimes, I dont think I'd ever heard of that distinction tbh. I think it's 2 slightly different uses for the term that depends who is in the convo

Only time I'd really say vocalist is when I'm talking about someone who either partially or complete uses non singing vocals. Because singer doesn't really describe someone who is screaming or something

Vocalist implies classical training and a focus on technique. Someone like Future calling themself a vocalist would be pretty insulting to a lot of people.

This is 100% true and if you don’t understand this point read a textbook

that's how the term is used man. there would be no point in distinguishing a singer from a vocalist at that point

    what @RVI said

that’s how the term is used among classically-trained vocalists but that’s like saying “the industry always implies the music industry because people in the music industry use that as short-hand”

yeah but that would only apply if it was devoid of context

if we're talking about music among professionals and you mention the word vocalist, you're going to naturally assume a vocalist is someone who was professionally and technically trained versus a layman or a dabbler for that matter

otherwise, there's zero point for the word itself to even exist lol

i believe you’re telling the truth about your experience, but i also believe that singing teachers & a lot of classical music instructors in general are some of the most pretentious people on the planet, so it makes sense that they’d tell you something so pretentious

    lowkey true
edumist is right bout the distinction btw but it's only rly applicable in cultures like professional singing world, but i think he mentioned that

commonly ppl interchange vocalist/singer when talkin bout bands n groups n whatever

anywho off topic vocal lessons gave me better range/breath control for sure but i basically dropped all the other techniques after quitting them bc i prefer the poppier way of singing aint no one gonna karaoke with classical technique unless it's some hamilton nerds
