    Bigger budgets >>

  • May 31, 2021

i’d say that there are as many great videos that show up as it used to be

it’s just that EVERYONE can make a vid now so even small artists release videos, but they’re usually not as creative

  • May 31, 2021

    these are GREAT videos

  • Fun fact, Sisqo's music video for Thong Song cost $1m. It cost the same amount as Michael Jackson music video/short film for Thriller.

budgets and the fact that theyre mainly consumed on the internet as opposed to tv

  • May 31, 2021

Because a team of professionals would do them with hundred of thousands of dollars for a budget. Now it’s so much amateur and DIY s*** going on that half ass thrown together s*** has actually become the aesthetic for music videos, even when an artist is major bc the indie artist drive the culture now.

Also most artist today release music much more frequently and don’t really bank on one single anymore so spending that much one video really doesn’t make sense if your name is not Jay-Z, Kanye, Beyoncé, Drake, etc

Why aren't they important anymore tho

Instant access due to the internet has made the market oversaturated and there’s less of a reliance on music videos to break a song

Yea the fact that we would sit and wait to watch a world premiere on 106 and park lol

  • May 31, 2021

If this was true (its reallly not), its because music videos actually matter back then when it came to selling records.

i disagree, i kinda think music videos have gotten better and more creative. obviously there were iconic mv's like anything Hype Williams directed in the 90s, but there's so much more exciting stuff rn to me. i mean, there's wild stuff being created like the BH - Buzzcut video, A$AP Forever, Magnolia, etc. I think the main thing is that it's so saturated as anybody can post any type of makeshift music video, whereas back then were premiered on TV and were more selective.

Music videos may be as creative as ever, but they no longer feel like a big deal. Internet kinda killed the concept as a super important art form. Anybody can make a video now and put it up themselves, whenever they want. Back in the day video's were an event. Hell, I still remember Runaway dropping on all MTV channels at the same time lol s*** felt like a big deal...and that was already at the start of the modern era. Can't imagine how big music video's used to feel in the 90s/80s.

nah, haven't seen anything else like this or A$AP Forever. the style hidji and ygaflm did on Magnolia is for sure though, they influenced a lot of ppl

  • Also in a way it's not really fair to say music videos were better because of higher production values.

Like this is lowkey one of the most beautiful and well put together music videos seen within my lifetime and I doubt the budget for it exceeded more than like...$100K? S*** I'd be surprised if it cost more than $5K.

This is another outstanding video that probably didn't have a high budget either.

Yeah expensive budgets do often make for more entertaining videos. More money for choreography, better locations, more special effects, better actors possibly, and s*** probably having a full camera and lighting crew. But end of the day I think the biggest factors comes into making a great music video is to the creativity and effort put forth by artists and labels that are putting together a music video.

    Afterlife

S*** that video won a Berlin Music Video award and a D&AD Pencil award. The latter being an award specifically for digital art, design, and advertising. Pretty solid award for those who create and edit media.
