Music videos may be as creative as ever, but they no longer feel like a big deal. Internet kinda killed the concept as a super important art form. Anybody can make a video now and put it up themselves, whenever they want. Back in the day video's were an event. Hell, I still remember Runaway dropping on all MTV channels at the same time lol s*** felt like a big deal...and that was already at the start of the modern era. Can't imagine how big music video's used to feel in the 90s/80s.
I remember watching world premiers for Mj Black or white and remember the time
you know what's crazy is that song was massive, top 5 on billboard, number 1 TRL, nominated for grammies, always on the radio, etc and didn't go gold or platinum
Smh
It hasn't regressed it's just a different style
He’s kinda right. The only ones who really put a lot into their music videos even for singles are Kendrick Cole Drake Big Sean Chris Brown Tory Lanez l-
Nicki to an extent. Weeknd is a cinephile and it shows in his videos. Janelle Anderson .Paak and Bruno have great videos. Then Future DaBaby Roddy. I mean Eminem Beyoncé Jay and Kanye are to be expected at this point.
Most of them now are all in the same areas. Similar settings and backgrounds. Similar aesthetics. And usually done by one of the same people that work on everything.
Cole Bennett makes a lot of people’s videos look better than they would with his tricks effects and vision for them

It should be by now because of how easy it is now. That’s surprising it hasn’t.

If you look up a lot of massive songs from them they have pretty disappointing cumulative sales compared to records today its interest to look at
I agree music videos fell off but the way she goes.
I miss watching like countdown on much music, and all those end of the year video playlists
real for much music love
real for much music love
Channel 28. Channel 29 Much Music. Channel 49 BET.
Pretty much the entire 90s and early 00s for me
Budgeting.
Along with this the accessibility of video/filming over the decades have made it so anyone with a iphone can make a music video.
Which idealistically should result in more creative videos but usually just ends up in a bunch of shirtless niggas jumping up and down with “fake” guns pointing at the camera.
This. The overall quality of everything regressing balls down to accessibility. Like you said idealistically this should result in more creativity but it really just means anybody can make a music video now.

This being said, we acting like creativity was a thing back then and those music videos didnt also have formulaic ideas.
Like everyone else NOT named Busta Rhymes started using the fish eye lens
Or every rap video being a james bond/superhero saving a damsel in distress (and it having nothing to do with the song)
nostalgia is a hell of a d***
Music videos were more essential for selling records cause it was necessary to drop singles as a rollout months ahead of the release date and there were actual channels that showed music videos
Shameless plug but do mine add up in artistic quality? I tried to avoid doing basic videos and be more creative

This though. It’s not AS necessary anymore
It costs a lot to shoot a high budget music video, like a lot a lot, nobody profits from it, you profit off what you’re marketing (music/tours/merch) but nowadays with the rise of streaming & social media it is simply not a needed form of promotion so why would you (or in this case a label) dump so much money into it, you’d be essentially burning cash.
That is why, for example, Kpop groups have such high budget mvs, YouTube is the biggest platform they have for promotion to an international audience so they’re gonna invest all they can into it.
this is why i fw lil nas x bc he’s making crazy big budget videos with choreography and stuff its cool to see
Creative well has run dry.....for the most part. Wont act like the world is black and white
There are some creative videos every so often but it’s not really so much of an industry standard anymore
It’s not much of a requirement and investment now because social media. There’s so many ways to promo an album/song and also streaming kinda plays a part. You don’t really need a music video but it does help if executed well. For example DaBaby during his 2019 run. Music videos where way more essential back then because you really only saw the artist if you went to a show or if they did interviews
If you look up a lot of massive songs from them they have pretty disappointing cumulative sales compared to records today its interest to look at
Agreed
nowadays I can really enjoy only 15$ budget music videos
most of the high budget videos became corny as hell

exactly this, every era has some concepts that just take off. High quality comment
