a gimmick is just something done purposefully to get attention

pretty much every single album rollout and most of the thing artists do are 100% gimmicks. just that some gimmicks come off a little more genuine and some are just too obvious and distasteful

these days gimmick has a much more negative connotation tho so it's used to attack people. people see low effort marketing as gimmicky
