The world we live in, you need some kind of trick or device to attract attention. Honestly from this definition it doesn’t even seem as negative as people seem to use it. All these artists have teams who come up with ways to get attention, marketing is basically just gimmick making. To relate it to the recent example, I support Lil Nas X but I don’t think I could really argue that the shoes and video aren’t a gimmick based on that definition, the video/single release was of course designed and intended to attract attention as pretty much any video/single is

Kanye had a song called "I Am a God" that caused some backlash on Yeezus but that album is totally flames so the gimmicky aspect of that is A-OK with me.
