you miss the part of the title where it was called Dark Lane DEMO Tapes?

these were songs that were never meant to be released and only dropped cause fans were demanding them or they leaked.

I get that it’s a demo tape but they clearly decided to mix them and couldn’t get it right

Yeah. They definitely mixed the tracks in between leaking and release, some of em are just ass. From Florida With Love sounds much better tbh tho

Damn I just listened to FFWL OG and it’s like 40 seconds shorter. Much longer intro but basically no outro. Also the kobe line obviously was re-recorded. It’s not at all like he just said f*** it and put the leaked versions on the tape

wait til someone tells you niggas about mixtapes days

Drake obviously made changes to the songs to improve them, adding parts and even from a mixing and mastering standpoint
I think we should understand demo in this case as songs that didn't make the album

Take Care had fantastic mixing, but yea Drake's music has never been outstanding in that regard otherwise. NWTS was okay, though I hear some distortion throughout and wasn't as engaging mixing wise

ehhh, its ok imo. not much "depth" or varied/dynamic to me feeling muffled/buried outside some songs i feel do have great mixes like Crew Love, Marvins Room, Good Ones Go or The Real Her. while im not as much of a fan of some stuff like Shot For Me, Underground Kings or Make me Proud. They come off "linear", "sterile" or "hitting a brickwall" if that makes sense. Still enjoyable tho.

its not bad tho like no mistakes were made such as clipping n the like. & its still enjoyable & listenable. i also feel the vocals are bit too behind everything on a lot of tracks, but again for laptop speaker that would actually make them clearer the way they did it since bass & other low frequencies arent there to bury stuff through Laptop speakers.

just that i dont think they plan to do anything "fancy" or tweak it to where the fidelity is only capable/fully explored on higher end equipment.

the general audience doesn't care about this much of course & mixing in general is still very much opinion overall as long as there arent any glaring issue such as major clipping/distortion/variable levels etc.

although i personally like his mixes overall on NWTS & iyrtitl probably the most out of his catalog off the top of my head.

my fav drake projects would probably be Take Care, More Life & So Far Gone tho. Also my personal edited, shorten & rearranged fanfic blassic album playlist of Scorpion lol. i go through days where i really love nwts too & other days where it doesnt do much, so i guess its an honorable mention.

but yeah, most the mixes of his are probably trying to appeal to the most as possible if i had to guess (which does make sense as an artist his size). which makes it just middle of the road for the most part by trying to get everything through on everything.

My hope is LP6 gets back to the clean sound of NWTS, IYRTITL & VIEWS.

Dark Lane Demo Tapes is excusable because its literally just B-Sides and Leaks he threw together to appease fans during Quarantine. But Scorpion had some terrible mixing on it (Looking at you OG Talk Up).

This is True... but they gonna skip over and say DEMOS while ignoring his last album from the biggest artist in the world was lazy half ass beats and mixing.

Listen to TC NWTS IYRTITL More Life ......... Then Scorpion and it’s jarring how cheap and half ass it sounds.

40 talks about the sound mixing and sound design on Drake's projects including the upcoming album and DLDT, everything we discussing on in this thread is discussed and explained in that interview.

Thank f*** the mixing is back in 40s hands cause

    Deep Pockets mix

I dont think 40 mixed scorpion tbh, think the last one he was involved with mixing wise was Views but I might be wrong

  • May 13, 2020

    Mixing on views though
    S*** sounded so damn crisp
Once you see “mix and mastered by Noah 40 Shebib” in the credits, that’s the equivalent of a woman with extra fat under the tricep, frying in the kitchen

You know that s*** coming out right

Like what I noticed is with Kendrick, Kanye, or even Lupe albums they sound fully wide and you can pick out small sounds almost everytime you listen, especially with better headphones. Even though some of their albums don't have the best mixing, you can at least get more depth with the sound, maybe their production choices are a lot more layered. However, I just never get the same feeling with Drake's albums, you're right as the mixers just make it good enough for the average fan. With that being said I still love the mixes on Take Care and Views especially.

I don’t 40 did either but from the biggest Artist in music 500 million dollar juggernaut. His next album needs to sound like it

There’s nothing anybody can do but hope they start trying again.

Because another album sounding like Scorpion will hurt people’s enjoyment of the album first listen like it did for so many.

Imagine Scorpion with Views mixing on first listen... I believe the album dose not get panned and hated on as much as it did.

Yea tbh my biggest problem with the album was the mixing, I'm sure it was the same case with many others even including the casuals

The last good mixed music from drake I remember was money in the grave, which was done by 40 I think. I thought that sounded nice. Makes sense the demo tapes wouldn’t be the greatest. I trust LP6 will sound amazing

  • May 13, 2020

I feel like Drake makes so much music on the road now it's affected it

  • May 13, 2020

toosie slide horrible. Silent st start then gets loud then silent again

  • Dark Lane definitely was lacking in the mixing a bit but still wasn't too bad. It was mixed by noel right? Maybe 40's just working on the album and for a loosie comp they didn't want to overwork him. Scorpion right when it came out had some horrible mixes on it. Views is and was excellent in that regard.
