my wishful thinking says that it's because people are starting to realize the negative impact nicotine has on your mental health long term

but realistically it's because of aesthetic reasons. smoking cigarettes stains your teeth, gives you bad breath, a cough, bad lungs and even leads to cancer in some cases
I grew up in Texas and seeing the nasty white boys who would "dip" (chewing tobacco) made me forever stay away from smoking or trying dip. Nicotine gum is an alternative but i would stay away from it too unless you're on a path to quit

Ofc walking around with a bottle in a brown paper bag is not subtle either but it’s possible to be more discreet with like alcohol or pills than with, say, a very ostentatious and smelly cig (weed is also like this ofc but you could at least make an edible… ain’t nobody, I hope, eating nicotine brownies lol)

S*** just sucks if you try to quit, and the methods of consuming nicotine are just flat out unhealthy for you. Plus, as cool as big tobacco is, them niggas truly are the worst for how much they actually push it onto us.

Yes, alcohol really SHOULD be banned, but people also understand that it won't work the way we want it to so they find the argument futile to make in the first place outside of religious stances, but even then.
