    its something ive never understood

i love this album, its very raw and expressive in all forms

i was a big fan of Indicud and the sounds he experimented with on that album, so coming into this album it felt very fresh from Cudi to see him continuing to experiment with these sounds and the songs were pretty good to me

I’ve never listened to this album so no opinion here but if this is true I might have to give it a fair go

As a Cudi Stan, I haven't listened to it in years. So I might recheck it.

I might also need to rerun Cudi's discography since it's been a while.

There’s not enough overlap between hip hop fans and fans of this type of rock, at least not at that time.

It was too weird for rap fans and not “good enough” to win over rock fans tbh.

Once it became a meme/hate train, it’s kind of just synonymous with trash in the music community so most people aren’t really going to engage with it

like just listen to this song

This and WZRD was not the direction to go in after MOTM1 and 2

I get artistic integrity and all that but he never got back to what his original trajectory appeared to be

Although I’m sure #COCAINE had something to do with that so fair enough

    Cudi the definition of misunderstood

I relate to cudi a lot tbh, I feel bad about how his public perception went down in this era. Then he bounced back but is now kind of back to being a punching bag

    • the album is good imo but its far from perfect, lots of stuff that could be removed
    • hip hop fans having aversion to rock
    • rock fans having aversion to hip hop artists
    • its stuck im that difficult position between emulating an old style and branching out to do something new. If it perfectly fit the genre people would complain its just copying old stuff. If it is based in the genre but with new elements/ideas people would complain it doesnt fit the genre enough. Cudi cant win either way. (I had someone tell me Infest The Rats Nest isnt a good album cause they heard that its not a good “thrash” album. So f***ing what if its not? Its still good music at the end of the day, why let context and over-categorisation ruin that for you?)

you telling me this album would be better received if he stopped making music after Indicud for a couple years and then dropped a SB2H?

No. It would have been better received if he gave us a full arc of the AKNC/MOTM1/MOTM2 (and even that was a little left but still a classic) sound the way that Ye gave us CD/Grad/LR before 808s or MBDTF/WTT before Yeezus

This kinda also ties into the Rich Paul thread convo lol

Again d**** is probably what’s at the root of him being so erratic but he should have spent a solid 5-6 years in the AKNC/MOTM/MOTM2 sound and his career goes totally different

It's not good nor an experimental album. It's just goofy and for that alone I quite like it

Overhated tbh. If it came out today niggas would act like it was an instant classic. Decent foray into punk rock for Cudi nothing special tho

It all sounds like f***ing s*** to me

All of the gimmicks people whine about never bothered me too much, it just sounds like horseshit

Wzrd I thought was mid, this is worse

And I love rock. Just not this

Edit also if you like it more power to you, just let me hate in peace

Overhated but still a weak album because of the fillers and interludes. Got some great songs though
