    gin and juice

I genuinely think that rap music becomes better with every year

but none of the newer artist can make a great project anymore
I can't even expect those from the OG's of 2010's

do you think albums will ever make a comeback?

or we are destined to live in a world where a good album is just a compilation of recent semi-finished demo songs?

nowadays I can absolutely love about 10 songs of the album and still say that album was mid

    last line too true

Feel like niggas just like the "idea" of an album.

That's why people were circle jerking the whole 7 song album thing in a period where the norm is for it to be much longer than that.

anyone sayin that I'm not looking hard enough ...

I didn't have to really search for it in any other era

even Playboi Carti could make great albums

    This is true

I’ve had to dip into other genres more this year than ever.

    To answer that question:
    To build a fan base
    To create great art
    To ensure longevity

Making great albums consistently is mandatory if an artist wants any kind of longevity

    yeah exactly

problem is most rappers dont have any sort of passion for rap aside from financial gain

there's only a small amount that actually take the genre serious

a large percentage of rappers that have popped on a mainstream level in the past 5 years have already fizzled out because they lack any sort dedication for the genre.

    yeah

the idea of albums came and went in the last 100 years so it isn't like a necessary thing to enjoy the music. but it makes sense that people like artists who give them a full experience of an album

No one cares about longevity in that sense.

Music is so disposable.....80% of the artists around now wont be around in 2 years. They just wanna get as much as they can for as long as they can.

People dont appreciate the art either. So they will continue to support artists who have 2 good songs on an 18 track record.

yeah the craziest part is that's its so acceptable.

they rather put two hits on an album and make the rest filler tracks than build a legacy. The main guy doing this is dababy rn. Literally puts a hit per album and the rest is all trash.

im glad we still have guys like kendrick putting time into the art.

I feel like Kendrick is on the other side of the spectrum.

So focused on the art that sometimes the music is joyless.

    Theres gotta be a balance.

maybe, but you always need one guy doing it the correct way. What if everyone took a fast food route like dababy and just churned out mediocre music nonstop. Then all the new rappers would follow suit. But if you have guys at the top like Kendrick taking the art serious then you have almost like a trickling effect where rappers just starting out follow his formula.

  • Oct 11, 2020

Protect Kendrick at all cost. At least set in the mainstream.

I think the big problem is that we don't appreciate albums anymore. There's no big pre-release build up, no taking off to the store and waiting in line to cop your favorite artists CD/vinyl/tape, none of the additional artwork and liner notes, etc. everything is just piped straight to our phones and we don't think much of it. It's like oh your album dropped? So did 700 other artists' albums that I'll be skimming thru

Maybe I'm just dusty, but that's how I see it

    That’s exactly how it is

The youths are trained to listen to something as fast as possible in order to listen to a million other things that they have instant access to.

Not looking good on the 10/23 front

To OP’s question: it’s hard to tell how consumption will continue to evolve over time. If streaming continues as the dominant method of consumption, which I think in all likelihood it will for the foreseeable future, then individual tracks are going to remain dominant.

We already had guys like Logic and YG doing Kendrick style concept projects on their debut albums, yet neither despite doing good numbers ended as critically acclaimed as GKMC despite doing a similar formula.
