Not everything is a writer's fault and often times with projects like that it's alot of rewrites and only one person gets credited sometimes.
The writer of Arrival also wrote the Elm Street remake,The Thing remake and this year Bloodshot the Vin Diesel movie.
Sometimes it takes the right project for a writer's talents to show.
