Do you occasionally read through baby name books from different countries to up your culture levels?
He’s right tho, you should definitely be able to tell where some of these names originated from. Pretty standard stuff. Never been to italy but could recognize an italian name. Same with vietnamese, never been but i could tell it was vietnamese. Maybe it was the way he said and it came across wrong but he def speakin facts

also when I meet people for the first time & I know where they're from based on their name (usually like the less obvious names like Ethiopian or Middle Eastern ones) they look genuinely happy that I know cus it shows that you have some knowledge of their culture at least. But it helps to know stuff deeper than that too

his original point was that hot pancakes was uncultured cos he had met someone called Phuc Boi but didn’t realise how common the name was - pancakes never said he didn’t recognise Vietnamese names, Kelye just added that in for some reason

Exactly, It helps a lot when you meet new people
"Hey do you have a middle name? I'm worried about calling a student something that sounds like an insult in English."
Dude really whiffed here

Def came across as rude but idk there was some truth to what he said. I wouldn’t say he’s uncultured for not knowing a name, but at the same time it doesn’t take a conscious effort into learning these things i think it’s just something you pick up when you interact with people from different cultures and observe stuff.
Edit: nvm i get what you’re saying, yeah no clue why that s*** was necessary maybe hes just trolling, dude already knew it was a vietnamese name

Yeah the exposure is key but tbh I don’t think he does have a point.
I agree You wouldn’t need a great deal of knowledge / exposure to Vietnamese culture or language to be able to spot a name likely to be Vietnamese, but I don’t understand how you would be able to determine if that name is common or not (which was hot pancakes point) without very significant exposure to that culture.
also a side note to this whole thing is that other Vietnamese people I've met pronounce that name like 'fook' so he wouldn't even really be saying 'fuck boy'
no i just have friends from different countries.
You have enough friends from these countries to be able to determine how frequently any given name occurs in their home countries?

if you know the language and how it’s written or a few words then it’s pretty easy to make out what country of origin it is from.
like others have said, when we meet new people especially foreign and they tell us their name some of us ask where they’re from or what country it’s from.
if you’re telling me it’s hard to know what a korean name looks like then idk for you mate.

But this isn’t a point anyone else is making apart from you?
Hot pancakes said he didn’t realise Phuc Bui was a common name - you called him uncultured and now you keep going on about not being able to recognise a Vietnamese name, but the guy never he didn’t know it was Vietnamese. You just brought that up out of nowhere

But he didn’t say he didn’t realise it was a Vietnamese name, just that it was a common name.

I feel him in the sense that he doesn’t want to say f*** boy in class and would rather not hear f*** boy during class

He just shouldn't call on the student and only use last names.
Lmao. This college tho I'd say f*** boy without any regrets
I feel him in the sense that he doesn’t want to say f*** boy in class and would rather not hear f*** boy during class
then he should've pronounced it correctly
then he should've pronounced it correctly
She could’ve just explained the correct pronunciation instead of jumping to 3rd base too
She never even attempted to correct him on that

Traveling is an economic privilege
