I’m being offered a retention bonus but I dislike being at this job to a great extent.. if I leave by June I probably could get a 10-20k bump in salary

This bonus tho would be paid upfront and sooner

Jan Update: Yea f*** that, thanks for reassuring me their offer was s*** guys. Got a more enjoyable job that pays 30k more in total comp and has lesser hours.

that’s almost 2 years so that’s an extra 10k on your salary each year. a nice boost but definitely not worth it if you really hate it

for perspective, if you get paid hourly it’s less than $1/hr more to be committed for years to something you hate. don’t do it

I hate the place and everyone I work with now. A single 20K bonus for two years, no. 20K bonus for each year, then yeah.

Whats the normal pay per hour/yearly?

It was 68k but they’re bumping me to 75k this year on top of the offered retention bonus. They also said raises in June will be 15-20%.

They had a huge turnover at mid year levels so they’re trying hard to keep people

Id stay. You know whats expected of you and at this point with what they said they are busting ass trying to get people to say so there is some security.

Yea I was thinking lot of people at my level leave for 90k base salaries all the time

The one time bonus is tempting rn tho because I could pay off some things

Yea it’s gotten pretty bad honestly my manager, senior above me, and India team leader quit within the same month

Lot of bullshit is falling on my head and I was very committed to leaving in June after normal raises

It’s about $5 more per hour actually.

    40 hours a week X 52 weeks = 2,080 hours annually

$10K over 2K hours is $5 extra per hour.

Up to OP to decide if 10K more a year is worth it or he can find a similar paying job.

Oof that’s hard to turn down when you could still get the chance to bounce in 2 years anyway

Assuming the benefits are solid too

I mean if I were you I'd rather leave for a 90k base salary job that I'd actually enjoy and then pay off those things as I go along. You'd probably still come out on top or break even including interests, but now you're in a better position for future wage negotiations & you're not doing something you dislike (assuming the new job is a good fit, but otherwise you're delaying the inevitable anyway.)

I’m not looking at the bonus separately. I’m looking at the bottom line fact that all OP has to do is just stay there 2 more years, and he’ll be getting paid 95k a year. That’s tough to find and a humongous pay bump from his 68k he’s making rn

    I average 50-60 hours

oh i was thinking after taxes but i’m not sure how it works with a large bonus that’s paid upfront like this

It sounds like you can easily find a job in your field and potentially at a higher base salary too

Your ability to live happily and your health in general is priceless and it doesn't sound like you're struggling to meet your material needs to where you'd have to sacrifice those two things for that bonus

I wouldn't stay if I was in your position but let me know if those assumptions in the first part are off
