definitions of words shift as the usage shifts
yeah trap originally referred to the lyrics but that's definitely not true anymore
holding on to some old definition is pointless and pretty stupid imo
Not when there is already a word for the music they make which is just hip hop music.
The music literally sounds nothing like trap music. Rappers now are closer to making R&B than they are trap music.
The only people who shifted the usage of the word are white kids and rap purist who use it to say s*** like “yea but that’s trap music it could never compare to Kendrick Lamar”
Everyone doesn’t do it directly but the only reason it’s still called trap is to disassociate it from the history of rap. And put it in a lower class.
yea that edm trap s*** is cringy and yea i feel like there's two eras of trap. That T.I. / Jeezy s*** had more bounce to it due to dudes like Toomp vs when everyone started jackin elements of Luger's sound heavy
Faxx
There was a time 2-3 years ago when hating on trap wasn't cool, you were basically an oldhead if you did that. The sound is just played out and it's getting backlash like everything else. In a year or two people will be dunking on hyperpop, tread, all that s***. Street rap will be out and sunny pop rap will be back in or whatever. Everything goes in cycles.
pretty much, just like how grunge killed 80s metal and then after grunge and other 90s styles of rock fell out of popularity the 80s nostalgia started creeping back in

hip hop/rap is the umbrella term, trap is a subgenre. and hate to break it to you but in the year 2021 it refers to the sound of the music, not the lyrical content. boom bap, trap, pluggnb, all these are subgenres. calling something any of these names implies that it's hip hop

That’s the way it’s used but it’s wrong. And white kids don’t get to write the history of it.
This why I’m glad TI opened a trap museum and hopefully more artist do more things like this to write their own history.

This facts tbh. This the only place that will call anything trap music. Niggas on here be calling s*** like Rodeo trap music. Irl mfs would look at you crazy cause when you say trap music you’re thinking lyrics.

So what should everyone call that specific type of production?
And don’t say “it’s just hip hop” cause that means y’all can’t call s*** dusty boom bap
So because he likes him better on a beat that's not generic trap music that uses the same drum patterns on every song, that makes him racist? Even though the beat he likes better is also produced by a black man? Some of the people on this forum man

It’s just hip hop fr tho. A lot of stuff y’all calling trap ain’t trap music. Trap music will always be defined by its OG definition. We not rewriting history because people don’t know the meaning of trap. Boom bap isn’t dusty either
I just want more rappers on dope electronic production like big fish theory and cool breakcore s***
If it sounds good it sounds good tho (when it comes to trap beats / boom bap) there’s room for everything as long as you enjoy it

What do you think of the genre “trap edm” which is just a bunch of fraternity white people jamming out to edm

So your saying the og definition of trap music is its own sub genre of hip hop but hip hop that uses a specific kind of production isn’t its own sub genre it’s just hip hop

at the end of the day it's really all just music
Cap
Boom bap beats given you the room to actually rap. Trap beats don't lol.
And ppl have been complaining for years that yet wish super lyrical rappers would get better production.
"Boom bap beats given you the room to actually rap. Trap beats don't lol."
said by a nigga that doesn't listen to trap beats.

Using “trap” production =/= trap music b
This line of thinking got folks thinking Rodeo is a trap album.

Imagine being this stupid. Lol.

The problem is the production isn’t really similar to what trap music was. That’s how I know people don’t actually listen. No way u can listen to old TI and think the production is that similar to the music today that u just have to call it trap music.
Imagine being this stupid. Lol.
you said trap beats don't give you room to rap but you claim you was a lil wayne stan from day 1.
If that's the case, you would know that's the dumbest s*** to ever say.

This not true, meanings of genres evolved all the time. What niggas are doing today would never be called hip hop.
Trap evolved, boom bap evolved, melodic rap evolved.
Kendrick was rapping rapping over trap beats all on Damn lol.
Yeah @CliCity that was a dumbass statement you said.
