Make 1 bad game: shut down
Make a GOTY contender that YOU did not market but instead shadowdropped: shut down
Can't make this s*** up
Also f***ing hilarious to bring up Square. Afaik they haven't had layoffs in years lol. Forspoken turbo bombed and they didn't fire anyone at Luminous, they repositioned them across the publisher into different teams.
cancelling games is the step before closing studios/laying people off - Japan is just a lot more chill about paying people to do nothing i guess? but Square just cancelled games and reported $140M+ in losses - if u think that's okay then u are a crazy person
but here in America where capitalism still rules people get paid to work and their work in-turn earns the company paying them money, idk how hard it is for people to understand this
just because u are a fan of a niche thing doesnt mean its gonna exist forever lmao maybe buy 2 copies next time lil bro
also a shadowdrop may have helped HFR
and if not
idk if selling people a 2D animation artstyle rhythm game in a completely new world months ahead would have mattered when all second half of 2022 the people wanted Starfield more than anything else

Japan has extremely stringest firing laws. They would rather just have you hired to sit in a closet doing nothing than firing you. Especially when hiring is incredibly difficult over for there video games rn.
Japan is just as capitalist as America lol. They just give a f*** about the rights of workers.

i mean those same workers are also let go eventually - it's just a less blunt process in Japan and of course i'm not a complete capitalist who thinks that Microsoft's way is okay - people have lives that need to be secured with more notice when that security may drop, that's a standard belief amongst most younger folks tbh
the US is run by old men
but we aren't gonna act like Japanese companies don't do lay-offs or shut down entire divisions - as i said they are just nicer about the news/they plan ahead with their workforce in mind
okay really though, when did they lie about Tango? Aaron Greenberg said Hi-Fi Rush had done well after 2 months of being out but come on guys - that's not enough to keep an entire studio going
they did fully lie about Arkane Austin though, that was a surprise but also not because Redfall has been their entire output since Prey lmao
they lied about backwards compatibility? don't Xbox Series consoles have the best backwards compatibility on the entire market?
and the 2 lines after that? wtf is that about
this tweet sucks ass

Dawg you're the one who brought up Square, a company that has avoided doing layoffs despite several poor quarters. I didn't bring them up
Square even avoided mass layoffs during XIV 1.0, a game that nearly destroyed the entire company. But MS can't keep the devs of their most acclaimed game that was also "very successful" on for another game? How tf does Tango get closed after that?
oh man nah

I always figured COD on Gamepass would be a last ditch desperation move when their subscriber numbers start dropping. They’re probably still making a decent amount of money selling 10+ year old CODs at almost full price.
These are just convos , you are going to mentally walk through every option so I’m not finna start doom thinking
But also i am a little worried
ABK makes more money than the whole Xbox division so when you spent the parent company’s money to acquire them there has to be a return of investment. Microsoft gaming is basically abk now because that’s where the money is and they want that 70 bill back.
Double fine, obsidian, ninja theory and the initiative are on the chopping block. The gears, halo and motorsport devs aren’t safe too if the keep flopping
Here comes the money. Oh here comes the money
