Is the story at least entertaining? Or just straight trash?

Nah it's definitely entertaining. The main plot is kinda weak but the side quests are good and the interactions with Kiryu and the rest of the crew make it worth it. It's a really fun game and better in every way mechanically, LAD7 just held the story bar high.

If you played ME3: Citadel it kinda has the same vibe.

It has it's yakuza charm with it's goofy plot developments and twists

The villains just aren't all that interesting of personalities

Gameplay is good, characters are well rounded in their own motivations and drink links add on to depth.

Def play erased name before infinite wealth, very great ending in that one

Ishin is just a side story non canon so doesn't really matter when you play that one

    New interview with the devs
    Article(s): dengekionline.com/article/202406/6872

Interview with the creators of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth: about the development and the next game in the series.

    • The development of part 8 started a year after the release of part 7. Immediately after the release, it was difficult to decide the further direction of the series — after all, not all fans liked the turn-based combat system. Therefore, it took time to think about everything.

    • Korea was considered one of the main locations, but in the end the choice fell on Hawaii. At first, there was no clear understanding of exactly what the city of Honolulu should look like. There were problems with both scale (wide roads, large houses) and NPCs (at first, the faces of foreigners were superimposed on ready-made models from the library, but it became clear that something was wrong here, namely the physique. I had to make all the models from scratch).

    • There is no subtitle in the Japanese version, like Infinite Wealth in the English version. In the English version, the subtitle came from a song by Ringo Shiina. We chose it because just Like a Dragon 2 would be strange in relation to the Japanese version without 2. Why is there no subtitle in Japan? Many people would have understood the allusion to the song.

    • The song plays at the end of the game. When capturing movements for the scene, she was used, but with one "but": at that time, no one contacted Ringo at all. There was no permission, so we took a little risk.

    • Kiryu was made ill for a reason. The reason: it was necessary to put Kiryu in a situation where he could think about his life and selfishness.

    • By the way, some of our past works had about 100 sub-stories, but recently we have been working to make each sub-story more elaborate in terms of content and direction, so there are not as many as there used to be. However, we have been carefully examining the position of the characters and what kind of impression we want to give them.

    • Osamu Iguchi from King Gnu staked out a place in the game after the director saw the video for the song "King Gnu - Teenager Forever".

    • We wanted to make it possible for the player to intentionally aim for an advantageous situation during battles, but the battles in “Ryu ga Gotoku 7” had a strong random element that made it difficult to strategically navigate the game as an RPG. Therefore, for this title, we were determined to improve the game by thoroughly considering “how to move so that the player can aim for an advantageous situation. We knew that as long as we could accomplish that, it would be interesting.

    • One of the antagonists, Yutaka Yamai, was inspired by Vicious from Cowboy Bebop.

    • About the next game in the series: Yokoyama knows about the fans' wishes in the person of Kiwami 3, but they want to release a new game that "you can't even imagine".

    • The collection of applications for auditioning girls for the new Ryu Ga Gotoku has recently been completed, we are waiting for the announcement of candidates!

Really deep detailed interview plenty more I didn't bother including, rec reading through it tho.

    Beat the game finally

Some general thoughts on gameplay itself. They still got a ways to go with QOL. Items should be sorted much better, HP/MP/Status should all be easier to get to than scrolling down all your s***. Wanted to get the ultimate weapons while I was in Japan, but you can't f***ing in fish in Japan apparently, that was an oversight. The last two people that join the party come way too late and I didn't even bother using them.

Don't really know how they'll adjust with the party in future games, but it's kinda in a weird spot if the cast continues to grow.

So much of the map with Japan is useless. I don't know how they'll manage balancing that with future games, but they got their work cut out for them. Now's the time to make a 50 hour cabaret game about dominating japan's industry please RGG

    As to the story

Villains were weak as hell. I hate when they have us fight desk jocky ass characters like that actually about s\*\*\*. One guy been living as a cult leader, the other as a damn obsessed geek. Neither of them two were real niggas.

F\*\*\* Ei-Chan. Yamai was cool. Chitose is the best female character they have written hands down. Easily the best new character, I'll go as far as to say she's the best party member next to Seonhee. I really rocked with Seonhee drink links and wouldn't mind a game that explores the Geomjiul world, but I doubt Japan will rock with that.

Plot felt like it was kinda just doing a lot, but that's Yakuza for you. Weaker story IMO, 7 was definitely a better story.
