The rapping over other beats mixtapes got killed by lawsuits not streaming.

Wiz and Curren$y were facing legal issues for performing the songs on their mixtapes and Mac Miller was sued for mixtape songs getting too popular.

Obviously they wouldn't work on streaming either but they were dead before streaming got really popular

even Frank has to keep NU scrubbed off everywhere cuz all the uncleared samples it uses

  • raps

It surprised me that Cole was able to put the Clue tape on streaming but I'm sure Cole can make some calls the average nigga can't lol

    j. cole is the most overrated rapper of all time besides drake

  • I mean ppl r pulling off way more egregious samples and putting them in streaming if not u can just go SoundCloud wym
Unless u mean just literally rapping on other ppl beats but ya that got killed by lawsuits

Tbh im a bigger fan of the sampling the famous beat and doing a dif song on it than just rapping on the og instrumental personally

Yep and even that was based on performing the song live not necessarily releasing it on a free mixtape

What do you mean? What about them?

    What killed it then?

I’m talking specifically rapping over other people’s songs on mixtapes btw

People were getting sued over mixtapes long before streaming took over.

Streaming IMO + the slow killing off of LiveMixtapes and Spinrilla Dat Piff type apps because of streaming

S*** was cooked in 2016-2017 when you'd start clicking niggas tapes and it had that CD icon where you couldn't download it no more you had to open it in Apple Music

But also post So Far gone to section 80 to more about nothing to Yellow Album to Acid Rap etc mixtapes in general became more like actual full projects to where if you weren't really really nice enough to make a song "yours" with a freestyle, it served you better to just make original music. Most dudes aren't Wayne to where they can hop on a song and make it theirs

  • Remember them using chance the rapper to rollout the albums that’s “so free” as long as you have a subscription.

If they didn’t sell and profit off these tapes then they didn’t lose lawsuits

Streaming killed the mixtape because that’s the only way two generations know how to access music so no new artist is gonna do that

As I’ve said multiple times the issue wasn’t releasing the tape it was performing it. Artists were facing lawsuits over PERFORMING the songs.

If you can’t perform the songs that are getting you hot you might as well just release an original project which is exactly what started happening.

Streaming is more so what has stopped them from coming back at all not what initially killed them.

Nobody said anybody lost a lawsuit. If you get threatened with a lawsuit you’re gonna stop before you get sued out of your ass

    Use Google brother

The biggest examples of people getting in trouble over mixtapes all happened before streaming was popular and the transition to artists releasing original projects to get hot did too.
