    abcnews.go.com/amp/GMA/Living/us-students-declining-math-scores-sobering-expert/story?id=116481011

Between 2019 and 2023, test scores for American fourth graders in math dropped by 18 points and scores for eighth graders dropped 27 points. Overall, math test scores stagnated, remaining comparable to math test scores from 1995, when the TIMSS began to be administered to students.

”The results are sobering," NCES Commissioner Peggy G. Carr told ABC News. "We started this assessment in 1995, so we have, essentially ... erased the gains that we were seeing for decades."

When compared with students in other countries, students in the U.S. are only in the middle of the pack and behind students in Asian and European countries including Singapore, Japan, the United Kingdom and Poland, according to TIMSS results.

Does this have to do with how they teach math these days to kids? It’s my understanding they changed it correct?

less about that and more about the brain chemistry of young students and young parents

teachers cannot compete with 13 second attention spans

i only say this as i have built somewhat of a mathematics tutoring empire in my state

Kids are passed to the next grade regardless if they know anything or not. No child left behind. Literally.

Hm that’s interesting I never thought about it like that. Do you think it has to do with parents not spending the appropriate time at home with struggle areas as well?

Schools have been shuttling kids thru school because their funding is based on assessments and graduation rates

If kids can do well there then they don’t have to learn jack s***

This has to change, especially while acknowledging the context of social media and AI

that plus the way schools are funded is by attendance and graduation rate

therefore there is really no consequence for students not learning, when they already dont want to learning or actively fight learning in the first place

they just do not value the education they are getting and where it can take them.
