this isn't about any sort of theory lmao. its a fact that capitalism is a global economic system. we import goods from all over the world and in those markets exploitation is rampant. even here in america, exploitation is rampant because workers do not own their labor.

race to the bottom is a pretty easy concept to understand

Im saying not necessarily tho if we could do reach a baseline of global prosperity between every country how is that bad?

    Trade between wealthy countries
Like in the EU hsnt caused a race to the bottom

The race itself is happening because some coutries are poor

Idk the answer to world poverty but id sure be a lot better with social democratic wealthy countries leading the charge

If yr getting into wallerstein and world systems theory and all that idk if i buy into that man

Capitalism has definitely shown one thing is the ability for individual countries to become extremely wealthy on their own

There’s enough human capital in developing countries to achieve prosperity

Not gonna sit here and pretend ik the answer to world poverty but ye

Yeah, keep not buying into it cause it’s not true. Dependency theory socialists talk about how the only reason the west is rich is because everywhere else is poor, yet conveniently ignore the fact that in the past 20 years many millions of millions of people have been lifted out of extreme poverty in China and India due to the liberation of their economic systems. If wealth were really a zero sum game then there wouldn’t be less people in extreme poverty now than there were 20 years ago, yet living standards in the west have only risen as well. The truth is poor countries are poor most often because their governments aren’t willing to take the steps needed to make them better off

No it wouldn't. Because at the end of the day, if there's going to be rich countries there's going to have to be poor countries. Capital isn't an infinite resource. Social democracies are not the utopias you make them out to be. you're canadian right?

y'know sometimes i read some things from honest to god socialists about how social democrats and progressives are our allies who need to be worked with because at the core they can correctly diagnose that capitalism is a problem but just dont go far enough in their remedies, and that they work from a place of genuineness in wanting to help the less privileged.

then i get on ktt and read some s*** like this and im wondering if any of that is true lmao

Like again i believe in innovation and wealth and prosperity and self determination

I just dnt believe it should be in place of people dying of poverty and living in despair

I honesty do believe we can hv it both ways. There are countries who are pretty damm close

I never considered myself this left wing but to yr previous question perhaps things like some kind of global ubi or
“Less restrictive“ borders are interesting to discuss w regards to that

You act like those things, outside of this concept of wealth, are exclusive to capitalism lol. As long as capitalism exists, people will die for it. It may not be in your country, but their system relies on it happening in other countries.

  • Mar 10, 2020

But then again, it also happens in your country. You live in canada right? Yeah, inequality exists there, and i'm sure you know about countries relationship with its indigenous population.

    Yea and trust me ik

The zero sum game thing im not convinced on

I can be swayed maybe but how do u explain again 10s of millions of people whose lives are literally better than they were 60 yrs ago

Now granted $500/yr to $5000 is not ideal but again it’s showing an upward trajectory

And at a certain point it definitely is government corruption

Im west african descent and boy the s*** tht goes on there

A lot of those countries have hugeeeeee gdps but it’s squandered bcus of corruption so u hv to factor that also man

South east asia 50 yrs ago was virtually in the same place as africa now look at vietnam, thailand, malaysia, phillipines etc

This might be a little outthereish and reductive but imagine smth like that in a global scale

better compared to what? labor is still exploited.

and yes its amazing how a system that relies on accumulating resources leads to corruption.

"Now we run into one of capitalism’s major contradictions. In
order to make a profit, capitalists must exploit workers, in other
words, pay them less than the value of the commodities that they
produce. So, there will always be more total value on the market than what can be paid for (and consumed) by the domestic
population. When markets become saturated, this causes what’s
called the crisis of over-production. There’s too much stuff, and
the people will never—can never—be paid enough to buy it all."

I can't believe f***ing Biden is gonna be the nominee. I say this as a Bernie stan of 5 f***ing years.

Bernie should not endorse Biden or do any sort of political rallies. Bernie's so f***ing weak with that, look at Hillary bashing Bernie AFTER HE DID RALLIES FOR HER

He owes this f***ing corrupt party absolutley nothing. F*** morals, stick up for yourself

Define extreme poverty? Humans lived in rural agrarian societies and tribes for centuries. Would that be described as extreme poverty?

Capitalism spreads disease, overpopulation, inequality, environmental degradation, and a loss of a sense of community.

Studies show that happiness in those "poorer" countries is still much higher than ours because they have a sense of community and culture.

I mean in all likelihood this thing will be all but over after tomorrow. And then we'll hear a bunch of propaganda about how America isn't ready for "radical" politics, how young people still don't vote. and how we have to now unify around another uninspiring neoliberal centrist. And Americas empire will be one step closer to crumbling

Its already crumbled. I will celebrate Trumps victory over Biden as the total collapse. Imagine 8 years of that man while the recession has already begun in his first term

Gonna get the f*** out of here and say told you so to every ignorant mf who didn't get off of their ass in the name of change

Wish old people would live longer to suffer through their failures. Good thing Corona is doing the work for me though

extreme poverty = like 2 dollars a day

we have 500k homeless people just here in america, look at the levels of inequality present in india. im sure those sweatshop workers in countries like vietnam are truly thriving under capitalism.

Agrarian societies in many places are indeed in extreme poverty only because the people in these places often can only afford to feed themselves and not much else. I don’t see how the system of capitalism spreads disease and overpopulation in itself. Inequality is a problem, yeah, but here’s the thing. Socialist countries still have poverty and in the best free market economies poor people are still given the social welfare needed to live a more comfortable life than in impoverished countries.

If happiness is higher in poor countries, that doesn’t mean they should remain poor or we should join them in poverty. One of the Scandinavian countries is like the “happiest” country and one of the poor Eastern European ones is the saddest. And a lot of these countries, especially in Africa, don’t trust their communities as much as you think they do lol

I think we just fundamentally philosophically disagree

I just dnt see the technical calculus of wht u call “exploitation” as some great evil. To me it’s just a function

Excess wealth should be taxed and invested in the people

One thing about socialisism i dnt like is how the theories are social science rhetorics written as if they were pure science . It’s too reductive

Yes bro ig theres something wrong w our work not = to the exact portion of the pie but we know what a good life qualifies as and government has the ability to present tht

For me that’s the only important/realistic vantage point to attack from
