FF7 is being split into 3 games, remake and rebirth are the first two

It’s not a great year for gaming when the most hyped release is just a classic game being remade

Alan wake 2 is actually new content at least

1m sales for Alan wake 2 was back in November, like 4 weeks after release or something

The og Alan wake was an Xbox exclusive which is why it didn’t sell great most likely

Alan wake 2 didnt have physical copies and wasn’t on steam, of course the sales were bad, but epic covered the bill

My original comment was that the year is going to be hype once the real announcements come. It’s obvious that Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are waiting to announce their heavy hitters until they can show off their new hardware with it

FF7 is not a remake, man. Idk how many times I gotta tell you this lol. It's also not the "most hyped" game of 2023, either.

You fr tried to tell me Alan Wake 2 is a bigger title than Dragon's Dogma 2. Be fr

Maybe if you actually engaged with the media you're talking about you'd actually know what you're talking about. The games are sequels. Like, extremely obviously so. The games are as much remakes as the Evangelion Rebuilds are. That is to say in name only lol. They've already introduced several characters that didn't even exist in the original game and drastically altered events with characters expressing knowledge of the final events of the original game.

It’s literally a remake, I don’t know what to tell you. It’s the same story but split up into 3 games. FF7 remake was just the first act of FF7, rebirth is the second act.

“FF7 remake isn’t a remake becuase they changed stuff” - the most delusional poster on KTT

A remake isn’t a port, stuff always gets changed

FF7R isn't a remake because they've altered the story, introduced several new characters, and completely changed the combat system, yes. Do you know what a remake is?

Name 1 remake that has completely altered the story of the original game. Name 1 remake where characters are aware of the events of the original game before they happen. It's literally a sequel. Characters are aware of s*** that happened in media released 10 years after FF7 original

I'm now convinced I'm being trolled. Know where Square has said the game isn't a remake? Inside the game. When you play it

The FF7 trilogy is more of a reimagining than a remake

A valid a***ogy to this is how “The Wilhelm Scream” by James Blake isn’t technically a cover of his dad’s song (“Where to Turn” by James Litherland) but a reimagining.

That’s just semantics and it was wholly irrelevant to our discussion which is why it’s pedantic and weird for that poster to obsess over how different the remake trilogy is, the word remake does not contain some meaning that says it has to be exactly like the game it’s a remake of

Remakes can range from extremely faithful to a near complete reimagining

There’s clearly a distinction to be made between remake and reimagining.
Ratchet & Clank 2016 on PS4 is also a reimagining despite being based on an earlier title, so is Star Fox Zero (-> Star Fox 64).

Star Fox zero is just a different story altogether, it’s like a reboot of the series

Ratchet and clank 2016 is described as a remake but like I said before, it’s still a remake even if they change things. A remake does not imply faithful remake. A remake can make changes to the story, gameplay, and graphics and still be a remake.

Oh yes reboot is like a synonym to reimagining.
And faithful remakes like TLOU Part I for example can be called “remakesters”.
Oh and remember when Vicarious Visions called Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy a “remaster plus” and not a remake??? That’s another term to consider!

S*** is getting silly ain’t it

Yep. Even weirder was metroid prime remastered in which they basically remade most of the assets from the ground up

I read a tweet last year that blew my mind: you’ll never see Nintendo use the word “remake” to describe their remakes.
It’s like the marketing execs got in a room together and all nodded in agreement and made it a cardinal rule

  • maxxing

It’s time for SIE to unveil what PlayStation studios have been cooking, but I get the feeling that they won’t be ready for 2024

We need to start splitting remakes into 3 categories

Remaster = bring the game to a modern platform and doing the bare minimum of cleaning up the game

EXAMPLE: Super Mario 3D All Stars. They didn’t do anything to it expect some minor things and minor graphic updates

Remake = building an old game from the ground up. New assets for everything. Basically a brand new game except they have source material to work with

EXAMPLE: Spyro Trilogy, Crash Trilogy. The EXACT original games, with a new coat of paint

Reimagining: technically a “remake” but they change the story and gameplay. A rework of what the original game was and flip it on its head. Has the same spirit of the game but different

EXAMPLE: FF7R, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4. They’re similar to their original game. But like I said, the gameplay can be completely different like FF7R and the story was similar to the OG but changed. Or RE4. Gameplay changed, story reworked, old levels and new levels added. It’s. Anew damn game

Overall, those 3 categories should be considered different and treated differently

  • maxxing

    Another great example

Yes, Nintendo listed this game as a “remaster”, but this is more a remake then it is a remaster IMO

This is how I define them personally. But I know the marketing heads choose the name for it one way or another
