Folk always in they feelings with him lmao
album is a solid 7 tho can't be too mad at the 6.5 score
Like Fantano says: "Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?"
Agreeing with the public/popular opinion instead of their personal taste and views defeats the purpose of a critic because musicians needs to be criticised in order to improve next time
I only heard 2 songs from that pharrell interview and one sounded so outdated that I think this score is deserved
He’s right a lot of the time and I like his writing
I know we’re not supposed to like pitchfork but in a time where music and art feels less and less valued I’ll appreciate any longer form music criticism/writing. I don’t get getting worked up over a review I disagree with, won’t change how I feel about it
i don’t get people who are getting angry about p4k reviews in 2025. alphonse is the only dude who tries on that staff and i’m not really a fan of his reviews like dat. he does that stereotypical p4k writer thing where they give you a long winded wikipedia summation of the artist’s career before they actually talk about the music. however he helps to put people onto new music from various regions and isn’t at least doing that trash poptimism crap p4k has been doing the last couple of years where they pretend sabrina carpenter is thë kate bush öf our times. i really like this album but this review isn’t really unfair. just enjoy the music on your own you don’t need someone to tell you if the album is good or not. or else your own self worth is non existent
Whenever I see a tweet like this I never see any reasoning or explanation given as to why a sexyy red album is inherently worse than a clipse album and cannot possibly be rated higher for any reason (or whichever artists are being compared)
they do have reasoning it’s just classic misogyny where they call her street walker music whilst listening to music about tricking pimping trapping & shooting from male artists
KTT still making threads about that website
It’s not 2010 anymore
Half the site is just nostalgia threads from the 2010s so it fits
What’s the point of a review if it isn’t personal taste, it’s opinion not journalism
What’s the point of a review if it isn’t personal taste, it’s opinion not journalism
No it’s both
It’s a***ysis and interpretation, grounded in historical and cultural context
To understand Coltrane you need to understand his progression from hard bop, modal jazz, etc. That isn’t an opinion it’s music history. Ignoring this context, and what shaped the sound we now call Coltrane is poor criticism
Good criticism blends objective musical knowledge (form, lineage, social context) with subjective response. It’s journalism with an interpretive lens, not just a reaction
I haven’t read this review
You won’t sit there and tell me LeRoi Jones, Albert Murray, Nat Hentoff & Spellmann “just gave their opinion” sorry!
He eats Subway like me!

A few things
I didn’t read the review either and I understand your sentiment, it doesn't actually go against what I said because while you might be educated, that doesn't necessitate having the same opinion as someone with the same information as you, because as I understand it art is emotional and physical and not just theoretical
It goes back to the question of what does it mean to "understand Coltrane"? To me art is about experiencing human emotions, so someone that doesn't speak English and never heard the word "Jazz" before is allowed to be moved by it too
if your interest in art is anchored by translating it into words and having it be an intellectual endeavour then through that lens you are 100% right in what you want and desire
To me it's valuable to have a certain level of education about art to accentuate the emotions, but I disagree with the principle of incessantly translating it into words
