There are plenty of high-level journalists who come from a completely different background or emphasis. If you can write and report and have the clips you'll get hired. I say this as a journalism grad who is at the moment working in a different field.

Alphonse isn't a good writer, though. He has a solid voice but just read any of his reviews and you'll pick up on some amateurish stuff (and typos). I say this as someone who occasionally enjoys his stuff.

Yeah, I'm not really mentioning the Journalism thing as some rite of passage into getting into a position like he's in.

More so, the amateur thing is really apparent when reading almost any of his reviews. Dude has like NO nuance or real substantial a***ysis/depth to any of his stuff. And I know he's gone on about trying to make the platform when it comes to Hip-Hop discussion less serious and more casual which is needed, but I can't say the medium he's provide nor his actual work is pushing towards that future.

I'll never knock the platform he's given smaller artists, but the writing itself is just so incredibly weak that's it hard to ignore.
