my sister does this. field is a clusterfuck right now, but I don’t think it’ll burst. I think career guidelines will become more in-sync and defined in the coming years. it really depends on where you work

im a data scientist. 'pays very well' is subjective - to me, data a***ysts dont make much, but as a data scientist, i (22 y/o) make 180k in a low cost of living area. data a***ysts probably make like 50-65k first year. ask away.

    This is so cap

UofT? What's your edu. background / project to get data scientist jobs?

Western. I had a prior degree in Genetics because my plan was to go into med school, ended up changing my mind near the end but I decided to finish up the degree anyways because I was close. Went back and did a degree in “data science” (basically a mix of CS and stats.) Interned at Shopify for two summers, got a job at Deloitte in data a***ytics and now I’m back to school about to start my Master’s because I have an interest in going into research

I didn’t really have a strong portfolio but the extensive genetics research I did throughout the first undergrad + getting the internship at shopify + a pretty good GPA was what helped me snag that first job.

yeah that strikes me as odd- would be more believable if he was in an area like the bay. ive even seen higher offers depending on your background/connects

only places paying that much for bachelors degree grads are hedge funds in ny or sf

U of T and Loo have better programs and recruiting for sure, I only did it at Western cause I did my first undergrad there too :) the quality of the program is whatever but the social aspect of the school is unmatched, definitely have no regrets...I really loved my time at western! I’m doing my Masters at loo so we’ll see how that goes, from what I’ve heard it’s definitely a different social environment compared to western. A lot more cutthroat and less focused on community building from what people have told me

You gotta learn to network for sure, and start early! I know it’s gonna be more difficult with everything that’s going on right now, but talk to as many people as you can. Create a linkedin, make a github and throw good quality work on there, attend as many job fairs as you can (virtually ofc), and don’t be afraid to cold email if you need to. Not sure what the hackathon scene is gonna be looking like this year but try some out if you can, all the ones I did provided invaluable experience working with others under pressure and allowed me to make connections with other students and recruiters. GPA doesn’t matter in the long run but it will keep some doors open, so make sure you give 100% effort for your courses.

for data science, the most important thing is having a solid understanding of statistics, followed by a***ytical thinking & programming skills (predictive modeling - neural networks, regressions, tree-based algorithms, etc). as a data scientist, you're expected to have expert-level knowledge in data a***ytics concepts.

data a***ytics requires statistical & programming knowledge but not to the depth you'll need for data science. (think t tests, basic stuff like means/median/mode, ANOVA, correlations, etc).

regarding education, i dont know your background, but most employers for reputable companies (i'd say the majority, but im not sure) require you to have at least a masters for data science.

i have a bachelors + masters from a top 15 university. that being said, i dont think education matters that much -- there are a lot of open-source datasets available online. just play around with those using python or R (i'd suggest python) and put it on your resume.

I Just completed my stats & social research bachelors and tryna get a relevant entry job with limited experience. You’re the Perfect guy to get advice from

“data a***ytics requires statistical & programming knowledge but not to the depth you'll need for data science. (think t tests, basic stuff like means/median/mode, ANOVA, correlations, etc).”

What specific job titles or key words should I be searching for to find jobs like this? I haven’t really touched the data science concepts you mentioned outside of regression in my curriculum so I feel like this would be my best bet.
