My job title is "Senior A***yst", but the actual work that I do would fall under "Data Science". I work for a Fortune 50 company, and make between $80K-$100K after two years of working.

The bulk of my work is writing Python & SQL scripts. I got my degree in Industrial & Systems Engineering with a focus in Operations Research. I've built a bunch of mathematical optimization models that would probably surpass what you would expect from someone with my degree & experience. I am definitely a lot stronger with the hardcore mathematics & optimization (think linear programming) than I am with the statistics side of things.

Everyone is different, but I currently prefer the "Data A***yst" path over the "Data Science" path. Obviously every situation is different, but I have found that, while data science is more lucrative (especially at first), it can be a lot more narrow-minded and lacking business context. Plus - I don't think I could manage being surrounded by data scientists all day. Not exactly my type of vibe.

Just finished my degree in statistics, working as a data a***yst starting next week. Gonna be getting 70k, tryna gain the skills to be a data scientist after putting in a year or so at this job

Details on the job & how you did it. Just finished my bachelors stats degree from UofT.

Most job postings I’ve seen want Python and SAS. I always interpreted a***ysts as simpler statistical methods yet again postings be on that bullshit asking for concepts I’ve never even heard of in class

U of T and Loo have better programs and recruiting for sure, I only did it at Western cause I did my first undergrad there too :) the quality of the program is whatever but the social aspect of the school is unmatched, definitely have no regrets...I really loved my time at western! I’m doing my Masters at loo so we’ll see how that goes, from what I’ve heard it’s definitely a different social environment compared to western. A lot more cutthroat and less focused on community building from what people have told me

You gotta learn to network for sure, and start early! I know it’s gonna be more difficult with everything that’s going on right now, but talk to as many people as you can. Create a linkedin, make a github and throw good quality work on there, attend as many job fairs as you can (virtually ofc), and don’t be afraid to cold email if you need to. Not sure what the hackathon scene is gonna be looking like this year but try some out if you can, all the ones I did provided invaluable experience working with others under pressure and allowed me to make connections with other students and recruiters. GPA doesn’t matter in the long run but it will keep some doors open, so make sure you give 100% effort for your courses.

reading ur posts and thanks for the knowledge, im tryna get into data a***ytics after being in IT for almost 4 years now lol. any tips on how to market my IT work into data a***ytics positions?

Just ended an IT internship where I was mostly building PCs and doing work in servers and VM building but I also was using a lot of excel for invnetory a***ysis and user account controls, and when i'm in school i work in their IT department where I don't have much on a***ytics.

Unfortunately I don't really have much a***ytics opportunities right now besides my own side projects, really trying to learn more in Python and R but I have been good at statistics courses at school.

    Congrats bro
I applied thru linkedin and had a phone screen and had two interviews, one behavioral and one technical. I had to write sql code on a whiteboard for the technical one and answer basic statistics questions.
If you don't know something on a posting google it and understand the basics
I had no idea how to use sql but learned enough to pass interview pretty quick

I did extremely well in an Intro to Database course covering relational algebra logic and basic MySQL. W3Schools came clutch, But we were only managing like 5 databases lol. I’m sure you’re in the hundreds.

You didn’t need any other programming language?

Basic stats questions as in ...? Like theory or calculations

So you did your own projects in your spare time to build a portfolio huh?

I’m down to self-teach off W3 or whatever but I have no idea where to start.

I know basic R, SQL and SPSS. As well as the Basic statistical methods and their interpretations used (ANOVA, regression and fitting models, t-tests, etc.)

No one tells you how much extra curricular stuff you need with a stats degree man.

You need pretty basic excel and python, but SQL was most important
Yeah just basic theory like what is a p-value, type-1, type-2 errors etc

im a data scientist. 'pays very well' is subjective - to me, data a***ysts dont make much, but as a data scientist, i (22 y/o) make 180k in a low cost of living area. data a***ysts probably make like 50-65k first year. ask away.

I'm curious how do businesses use machine learning? Like what sort of predictive modeling issue would require a neural network vs something like logistic regression

I'm taking this right now s*** is gonna be the bane of my existence btwn this and tensor calculus

Data science is hot rn but very competitive and a masters degree is becoming the new norm than just a bachelors.

Would also recommend looking into data engineer positions. Generally less a***ytics work but basically the team that manages a company’s data for use by a***ytics and misc teams.

Those positions are hot rn too but without the education barrier. Lot of crossover with same software and frameworks used by data scientists/analysts

I’m studying business a***ytics/information systems in college right now. honestly one of the best majors in terms of starting salaries. And not ridiculously hard like engineering. If you’re good with stats or just don’t want to deal with the difficulty of comp sci or engineering it’s very nice.

Yeah i mean all that entry s*** says you need 100 things but that is not realistic and shouldn't discourage you.
Definitely tailor your resume to show you have the skills in the posting you are interested in otherwise itll be trashed immediately by an algorithm
