Should I take this data entry job?

I mean I have no experience in office environment and plus I’m tired of being unemployed.

Would that help me on my resume in the future for data/financial a***yst entry level jobs?

probably wont help you at all but itll pay the bills. try to figure out how badly you need the money and evaluate what you could be doing otherwise with that time (if you have the privilege)

Well this will give me office experience and boost my excel knowledge.

I can’t find anything else and rather do this then find another retail or food job.

I think it depends on the gig, but usually data entry won't help with excel knowledge tbh. It's better than retail or a food job I guess

i’m doing performance data a***ysis now but it’s very light. i’m going to be looking for something more challenging soon, most likely a more in depth data a***ysis position.

i have an econ degree but it at least focused on data a***ysis so i learned a decent amount about the field while in school, although i probably could have selected a better major (didn’t know i wanted to get into this until after the fact). i graduated in top few of my year, got good grades in my statistics classes so that will count for something i hope?

i am pretty much advanced level in excel, intermediate in power query/powerbi, and i am currently learning python and will probably try and get experience with sql as well

do you think i’ll have a chance at a more intermediate level job somewhere? or are there any other skills/classifications/schooling i will need to focus on first?

i’m really just after a more fulfilling data a***ysis role eventually. my current job is pretty cushy but i feel under utilized sometimes. hope my degree didn’t bar me from advancing my career lol

How long have you been at your job? If you have been there for a good amount of time, I think you can look for a better one now.

Do youn mind telling me more about what you do and what kind of skills you need of a day to day basis, I am trying to work in a similar field.

2 years but just started this role this year.

as far as what i do, i basically track and a***yze employee performance overtime, mostly on a micro month to month basis.

i track their kpis and create dashboards and reports for mid / upper level management.

a lot of Excel for the smaller stuff, a lot of DAX/Power BI for the big projects

deal with millions of records at times, so i have the experience with that, i’m just lacking sql. gonna start learning it on the side i think.

for data science, the most important thing is having a solid understanding of statistics, followed by a***ytical thinking & programming skills (predictive modeling - neural networks, regressions, tree-based algorithms, etc). as a data scientist, you're expected to have expert-level knowledge in data a***ytics concepts.

data a***ytics requires statistical & programming knowledge but not to the depth you'll need for data science. (think t tests, basic stuff like means/median/mode, ANOVA, correlations, etc).

regarding education, i dont know your background, but most employers for reputable companies (i'd say the majority, but im not sure) require you to have at least a masters for data science.

i have a bachelors + masters from a top 15 university. that being said, i dont think education matters that much -- there are a lot of open-source datasets available online. just play around with those using python or R (i'd suggest python) and put it on your resume.

Would doing data a***yst boot camp help land entry level position?

It depends, software/data a***ysis hiring is in a weird place rn due to the influx of recent boot camp grads and new grads looking for jobs in general who don’t have a lot of relevant experience vs the types of positions that need to be filled. If you aren’t hurting for the money then sure, it can’t hurt; just be prepared to put in a legitimate 12 hours of hard work a day. Obviously not everyone in your cohort will get jobs right away or necessarily at all, but put the work in, create lots of good projects, and make sure you’re still networking and applying to jobs throughout the duration of the boot camp.

Also goes without saying, but do some research and make sure that you’re attending a high-quality bootcamp if you decide to go that route. I know six people who have done boot camps and gotten job since the bandemic began but tbh, they would’ve gotten jobs regardless because they’re super hardworking and diligent people. It’s a cliche but end of the day you’ll get what you put in to this

I’m working 9-6 right now and wouldn’t have that much time for boot camp. Are they all this excessive and time consuming?

If boot camp is not that necessary, then how ca I get my foot in the door?

Just want a chance and then climb my way up.
