  • Even beyond the poor reviews, many people on Reddit and Twitter seem to be calling it mid, dragged on, or too many filler tracks. I think this album was pretty amazing, with God Breathed the only actual song (Tell The Vision is a damn interlude idc) I didn’t really rock with (although the production was dope).

After years of short ass Kanye albums with short ass songs, how long this album is was such a breath of fresh air to me. I’d much rather this than him cutting amazing tracks like he often tends to do (imagine this album without Believe What I say or Come to Life). The album has slow Kanye, banger Kanye, and lyrical Kanye all with soulful beats, amazing production, and GODLY features. I really don’t understand how other people aren’t hearing how amazing this. Do we think this is just another grower like Pablo and Yeezus?

We don't know yet if people are liking this or not but we for sure know they are listening to it.

I think a lot of people like it, and a lot of people will come around to it later like they always do. The quality is undeniable this time

The whole “filler” argument is expected for any long album, but I don’t think anyone who truly listened to the whole thing believes that. Tell the Vision is the only skippable song (not talking Pt 2’s) on the entire album. I couldn’t cut another one if I tried. That’s not filler

Im seeing mad love on twitter tbh

Only negative comments are from people that hate Kanye himself. But is for sure one of the most polarizing works of the recent years.

It’s mainly media personalities and publications that hate it. I’ve seen love from even people that haven’t been following Ye for a minute. Of course there’s gonna be hate from Kanye haters/Drake Stans but it just makes it worse that the music this time is really good but the media hates it cause of the antics

The crazy thing to me is that relatively few people listen to music as ‘albums’ anymore anyway. If people’s main gripe is about the length, drop your favourites into a playlist and listen to that

Yes. Im even seeing people making fun of critics for panning this album

The album is far too long though, the oversaturation of material on it make's it a cumbersome experience at times

JIK & Ye were too brief for sure, but Donda is the stark opposite, it is very maximalist when a 16-20 tracklist would have represented a better middle-ground

it's hard when you have a great track like pure souls and then the outro is too damn f***in long

I truly wonder how CD - Grad would have been perceived in this era. I think people forgot about how Kanye used to have long outros and refrains on his albums. I missed s*** like this.

Tbh i dont mind most of the stretched out parts in some of the songs except maybe God Breathed, im sick of tracks being like two minutes long

Yep and definitely not multiple times to appreciate all the depth and moments.

I agree that I'd rather have too much Kanye than too little (ie., ye and JIK). But I have to agree with the criticism that the sprawl of the album doesn't quite work for me - not so much that there's "filler" but there are a bunch of songs that stand above the rest and keeping just those would be more than a full length album as is. I saw the word "b-sides" used in one of the reviews and I think that's certainly true for somewhere around 1/4 of the songs. I think a little more curation could have made this a much stronger album, what we have (while very good) seems a little mixtape-y and the sequencing is a bit careless imo.

Doesn't even matter. It'll be appreciated once the smoke clears and the trolls move on to something else

Also - I forget where, but I saw someone point out that the sequencing may be part of what makes the album feel like a drag to some people. It's hard to go on a journey with a record when the energy is all over the place from track to track.

  • Aug 31, 2021

we'll see once the "too much hype" narrative dies off and people are still listening to it a few weeks down the road.

Exactly, it's a lazy criticism because i'm going back to literally every track

This is very true. My only gripe with this album is the sloppy sequencing. Even tho I bump this like Pablo where I just play the songs that fit my mood at the time

Fair point, but also how would “I talk to god everyday, that’s my bestie” be received in CD-Grad days
