i'm glad the soundcloud era is over and new rappers who are actually proud of making rap music are blowing up again. Niggas can't even be proud of the genre and the culture that put them on, Internalized racism is real.

Tbh you can say that rock music was created by or pioneered by black ppl. From blues and swing music to Chuck Berry its been developed by black ppl. Its just that rap music has replaced it in popularity in the black community.

its a testament to how powerful whiteness is even in niggas minds that rock has been dead as a genre since the TRL/106 era firmly ended yet we still hold rappers to the standard of "rockstars" that really were probably tame even in their heyday compared to a Pac or DMX or a Jimi Hendrix or Rick James.

At the same time "rapstars" don't sound as cool I will admit.

But the rockstar s***, was cool when Wayne did it while being at the top of rap and having no reason to...was cool when Ye did it because IDK I used to like when he randomly compared himself to prolific white men for no reason until 2016-2019 happened...then it devolved into choker chains, autotune being an excuse to not really make actual lyrics lol and just corny ass imagery; tattoos and rolling your eyes to the back of your head sticking your tongue out and all that cringe ass s***. basically trippie redd

So many right answers in this thread.

They're not rockstars in the traditional sense, but they're rockstars in the spirit they embody in certain cases. Personally carti and lil uzi dont really fulfill this at all.

People like Denzel, Kanye, X, Ski Mask, Travis to a certain extent, Cudi, etc. definitely do. Obviously the energy they bring to the stage is a large part of it, and also the content of their songs for these guys.

One of the reasons I think rappers drift to aligning themselves with rock is because the genres are in very similar positions for the height of their popularity. They were both the most popular genres other than pop (obviously) at the height of their fame, and they were both the genres where majority of boundaries for music were being pushed in the mainstream. Also, the content is quite similar as well, whether its about heartbreak, d****, or anti-establishment
