Yes, and studying music without the use of performing, composing, or playing doesn’t make you a musician (music journalism / criticism)

You can also study sports without being an athlete

"sports" is not really a natural phenomenon like "music". All music uses rhythm there is not a similar through line in the sports world. It's not really a substantive comparison

You’re breaking it down into completely unnecessary semantics. It was just a simple a***ogy to explain how the term “vocalist” relates to “musician”.

    Like “red” is to “colors”.

    And “five” is to “numbers”.

Both “vocalist” is to “musician” and “swimmer” is to “athlete”. That’s all.

Also, the similar through line in sports would be competition.

All music contains rhythm and all sports contain competition; if there’s no competitive aspect, it is not a sport

I disagree I actually feel the opposite. You are only looking at the language to make the comparison. your literally pointing to the logic of the language, which words are categories and which are sub categories. I feel that doesn't get to the fundamental difference between the two which is natural

I’m only looking at the language because this was never to make some deep connection between music and sports

It was literally just a simple a***ogy to explain why a vocalist is a musician, you’re overthinking it way too much.

A musician is someone who writes, performs, and/or plays music. Therefore, a vocalist is a musician.

An athlete is someone who is trained or skilled to perform a sport. Therefore, an MLB player is an athlete.

    That’s it

Pretty horrible to say that ADELE/BEYONCE/MJ/THE WEEKND aren't msuicans because they don't play an instrument.

    Those artists all play instruments

  • Yes. Only cacs like Ben Shapiro would disagree.

Yes. Your voice is an instrument. Rappers are vocalists. Therefore, rappers are musicians.

Yes they are because a musician is anyone who performs, composes, or plays music.

They compose and perform verses, only without any instrumentation. They’re still musicians.

    The voice is an instrument.

Without rappers/singers the instrumental would still be…music?

Without the instrumental the “song” would be spoken word

Which makes the producers the musicians, they make the music

Just my opinion though. I think the term y’all are looking for is vocalist or recording artist

    Acapella singing is still music

They rap over instrumentals. That combo = music. They're musicians.

A capella singers use melody as an instrument. Also music
