How would you monitor something like that and do you think thatd put your kid at a disadvantage?
I remember my dad made my uncle install a net nanny software on my computer when he caught me looking at a Webcam girl ad and I just factory reset the computer to take it off
If anything it just helped my problem solving skills
but you turned out fine right? 2 Girls 1 Cup, Pain Olympics, etc. was crazy to me but it didn't mentally scar me or anything
I’m fine sure. But I’m desensitized to a lot of s*** that should just be reprehensible.
It’s why recently I just refuse to click and watch on certain things because we should not be used to seeing s*** like that.
Yall kids gon be dumb as s*** not being able to look certain s*** up on the internet and learn stuff by themselves. The ''highschool'' age isnt realistic at all, dont they have class groupchats in middle school now
The only real way to protect kids is to instill good values in them cant protect them from everything but hopefully you taught them to make the right choices
true, it's an interesting topic to me because I can't see myself restricting my kids from the Internet when it did so much for me growing up
I mean, I think kids should be looking at age appropriate stuff at certain ages. In elementary and middle school I for sure will have parental restrictions on my internet. In HS I’ll open it up while still making sure they’re safe, I think 9th grade you’re like 13 or 14? So that’s a good age.

Facts.

Honestly its just about discipline lmao
Internet wasnt blocked in my house i just knew what not to look up

You can tell a kid not to do something as much as you like in the end they’re still kids and are going to want to find out by themselves. It’s why you touch the stove to see if it’ll really hurt. Or use the sharp knife when you’re told not to.

It's not about telling em. and if you dont allow em on the internet when they wanna watch p***, theyll watch it on someone elses pc or phone
blocking all of the internet from kids is crazy tbh
u just need to be careful and try to use as many parental lock tools type things u can and also just teach the kids before going on the internet
dont just let them do whatever they want and learn themselves, teach them how to use it and for what etc etc
these days u got enough tools to block certain sites, keywords etc etc so the kids dont see them
blocking all of internet is crazy
social media a different story though
It's not about telling em. and if you dont allow em on the internet when they wanna watch p***, theyll watch it on someone elses pc or phone
yeah exactly
coming from a muslim background its pretty obvious to me that not allowing ur kids to do stuff doesnt work bc that makes them want to do it more sometimes even has a very very negative effect
theres balance in these things
So for personal context, I moved a ton as a kid and ended up pretty much only having the Internet as a constant social outlet until I was 14. I joined my first forum at 7 (s/o bzpower lmao) and had my first social profile on MySpace at 13.
I would want to take a pretty hands on approach until they turn 13. I’d definitely want to limit screen time before then to minimize addictive behaviors and would want to begin discussing what my kid finds online from an early age, which is what my dad did. I never had a problem with him monitoring my history because that’s just how I was raised, and it actually taught me to come to him and ask about things I wasn’t sure of when I saw people say them online. Sure, I was a moody teen about it once I got to high school lmao, but that was inevitable.
In terms of social media especially, I’d probably restrict them from having profiles of themselves until 13 and be very honest about the pros and cons and the need to be mindful in what you post. Hell, I recently had to go through and scrub my fb because I had posts on there from my 14 year old self that I for SURE don’t want anyone associating with my 27 year old self.
In general, I think the biggest key is honesty. It’s one thing to let kids be kids, but we opened a Pandora’s box in terms of what literally anyone can access in a moment and that’s not something I feel is best handled by restrictions that make the kid want to make up for lost time once they’ve got the means to get around them.
i was on the internet at like, 8?
but back then there was AOL, which had very easy to configure parental controls
you couldn’t just hit your browser and BOOM you have the internet, you had to physically log into an AOL account. and your parents could create you an AOL kids account which automatically filtered out adult content from your browser
yea i’m old
Those were the days lol
It's not about telling em. and if you dont allow em on the internet when they wanna watch p***, theyll watch it on someone elses pc or phone
That’s not a thing until later ages though.
Depends
Id let my kid watch video games and cartoons and s*** on Youtube like I did
Instagram, twitter, etc is a no no though
yea pretty much no soical media til like late middle school at least
That’s not a thing until later ages though.
dont ask me at what age i started googling b***ies

Whatever year the PSP came out for me.
dont ask me at what age i started googling b***ies
i was watching lesbians kissing on youtube
How would you monitor something like that and do you think thatd put your kid at a disadvantage?
Become technologically savvy and block/lockdown sites you don’t want them to be able to access
And raise your kid so that they aren’t even interested in those things anyways
Double whammy
idk 7 or whatever but id be monitoring it and giving them a rundown on what to avoid for their own health
