a complete failure of a city, community and parenting

    foxbaltimore.com/news/project-baltimore/city-student-passes-3-classes-in-four-years-ranks-near-top-half-of-class-with-013-gpa

"As we dig deeper into her son’s records, we can see in his first three years at Augusta Fells, he failed 22 classes and was late or absent 272 days. But in those three years, only one teacher requested a parent conference, which France says never happened. No one from the school told France her son was failing and not going to class."

" But after four years of high school, France just learned, her 17-year-old must start over. He’s been moved back to ninth grade."

"His transcripts show he’s passed just three classes in four years, earning 2.5 credits, placing him in ninth grade."

Holy f***. Imagine being 17 in the ninth grade. Everyone around you is tiny and you're just about to be grown. People your age are in college, but you're reading Macbeth for the second time. You wasted four years.

poor kid, being 17 forced to redo high school has to be one of the most demoralizing things ever

I had a teacher write a letter home to my mother because I asked her if she cries herself to sleep at night, but you disappear for 270+ days and nobody bats an eye? wow.

    oof

  • This is deeply disturbing. A complete failure on the education system in America but they like to keep them uneducated because that’s how they continue to get away with this bullshit

  • Mar 3, 2021

mom needs to read the grades like at least once bruh

they give you the transcript at the end

Honestly, I don't even see them being there with him. If he's #62, that means there's people that care even less than him. A majority of them might just drop out and never go back, because they'll be even less inclined to care the second time around knowing that they avoided it the first time. They don't value education in general, and might value it even less because of the global pandemic and online classes.

Parents aren’t completely absolved of responsibility but this is most definitely the effect of a cycle that has been going on for decades

I honestly place most of it on the parent particularly in this instance

Scrolled down for 5 seconds, read it, got the jist of the comments and decided that it wasn't going to get any better from there.

It's stunning the amount of stupidity.

"Why would you have a kid if you're working three jobs?"

Like.. maybe she has three jobs because she has a kid. What? YouTube commenters are so dense

Not sure how it was for you but I grew up in a poor class of North & West Philly. My mom was on my ass about my school work whether if it's reports cards or parent teacher meetings. I think that's what it's all about.

If your parents care enough about your school they can transfer you to another school or make the private school sacrifice. How is a mother just finding out her son has to go back to the ninth grade after all these years?

It's still f*** America but at some point we as Black folks gotta change. Because America sure is not

Private school costs are not an option for many people, but it cost $0 to look into your sons grades
