Because if there wasn't a check behind it these dudes wouldn't ever touch a mic

The point being its a far higher percentage of those types than it was in eras preceding, and I say that really bc these dudes wear that motivation on their sleeve, in their music

impressing their peers or trying to make classic music is rarely what I hear out these dudes

I feel you but that’s always been the case.

what exactly you referring to with that

also i didn't feel like your initial post was directed at me tbh but i was just pointing it out. Just because people go through certain phases of enjoying something more or less for a while doesn't necessarily mean there isn't a huge love for the music & culture

but i do realize there are a lot of people for which it IS actually true. You can especially notice with people who use hiphop music to get a quick buck or fame

Can anyone else relate to this?

Music I used to enjoy affects me less. New music is generally not that interesting to me, aside from a few artists I stan, but even their impact on me feels reduced.

Some of it may come from my learning the technical aspects of music production. Producers will say they had to relearn how to enjoy music as a listener.

Music used to be my favorite thing tbh. It’s really a shock to me and my identity that I may not enjoy it as much anymore.

These new rappers are geared towards high schoolers

This, but also there’s soooo many genres and sub genres out there. Don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone

Well put! There’s so much music to discover it’s endless which is a beautiful thing

  • Feb 24, 2021

it's almost like no one is dropping anymore

    weird

  • Feb 24, 2021

This actually can be a sign of depression

Happened to me a couple years ago, just lost all interest in it for real with everything that was going on in my life back then.

  • Feb 24, 2021

There's also things you can do to try to break the malaise

Started a CD collection of my fav s*** and that's given me some happiness during quar

  • Feb 24, 2021

Listen to new genres. I guarantee you'll fall back in love with music.

Yeah ur right. I just know that’s there’s a lot of ktt users that only big up the music from like 2011-2015. Another before or after that to them is trash. So sometimes I gotta question how much they really like rap

Rn feels like right before the blog era started when it wasnt a lot of good music and we needed some new s***

  • SHAQUILLE

Many of the legends we champion started rapping because for money or because someone in their hood told them they should.

Money was a motivation for most. I'm not denying that. But really trying to be the best (or biggest) on a musical tip was usually an even bigger factor. You dont even gotta go back to the 90s or 00s, Drake, Kendrick, Cole, it applies to the 10s Big 3. 50, Ye, Em, Wayne, Game, Ross, they all wanted to be that nigga in the 00s

What Im arguing is that the current crop, primarily, looks at music as a means for money or clout first second and third. That's why a nigga like Pop Smoke, who legit wanted to carry that mantle of being an elite ass New York artist, hit different than these other drill niggas

    aaaaaaaaaa

also i dont get the "streaming era" criticism either

Yeah if anything streaming is great for music lovers.

Only thing there is that the experience of purchasing an album in-stores really does create a different connection to the music, it gets its own memory, and that's been lost

With the way this sub talks about Drake it makes you wonder if they listen to anything actually interesting.

  • as far as artists being interesting, and having unique backstories, I feel like thats going to continue to diminish w how online things are becoming

niggas just gonna link up from breakout rooms during zoom concerts, before long

how old are you? i had this moment at the end of my teenage years/early 20s before catching a new wind.

I basically had just been through that early 2010s period where I watched Kanye peak, Kendrick emerge, Drake become a superstar, ASAP & Odd Future pop, Weeknd & Frank early runs, etc and I just didn't think s*** would ever be touched so I got burnt out. I regret this now because I missed some amazing moments during that period where I wasn't moved by anything (namely Lil Peep who I didn't discover until after he died) but yeah.

My advice is to power through. There's some really good stuff out there.

Same. I’ve started enjoying newer music way more at 24

it's always fresh to me cause I'll typically go through phases specific to regions or genres, I might listen to some DMV rappers for 2-3 weeks, then check out Bay area artists, switch over to afrobeats, then back to my usual bangers, etc. I finally checked out LUCKI last week after hearing about him for yeaaars. Idk it's always some discographies I haven't delved into yet

Great way to discover music, I fw this. I think i attempt this unconsciously.

Take a day to just go listen to artists you haven't before. Genres you don't listen to much.

Hip hop has become absolutel s*** but I discovered so many good underrated electronic/dance artists because of that.

This is happening to me as well tbh, was gonna make a thread about it

Learning to produce definitely ruined the purity of listening for me, I can’t help but feel like I’ve heard it all production wise (which I know isn’t true and is a terrible feeling)

I’ve not been excited by a new artist since 2013, but then again I definitely don’t consume music like I used to

And while I still enjoy the music that listen to regularly, it’s more like comfort food then something that feels refreshing

Personally, not as motivated to seek out music right now because I use new stuff I listen to help develop an association between it and new life events. Right now things feel stagnant because of quarantine and I don't want to dredge up bad memories when I listen to something I like in the future

    totally, me too.

I actually that's a big part of the answer... life is repetitive in quar, many ppl are depressed, and the usual contexts we listened to music in have disappeared (eg commuting)
