Trash comprehension. Thread isn't about hip hop.

then your comment isn't relevant and you just wanted to talk

you came in here outright labeling me as having "mental health issues" like i shouldn't be listened to or i'm defective or something.

    I'm talking about the culture

Obviously there are great irrelevant artists out there

I've been listening to Roddy way before he blew up, just so happens that he is a great artist and went IN on billboard

  • Feb 24, 2021

I felt like this two years ago then I went through a retro wave phase...now I'm back to listening to artists I enjoy

  • Not as much groundbreaking s***. Outside of a few people who is really bringing something new at a high level?

RateYourMusic, then find links to genres that you find interesting, then look at top releases and go from there. People even compile lists of cool things happening in the genre, or are related to the piece of work that you click on. It's a massive rabbit hole you can get lost for days.

    Thank you

    Yeah just growing up tbh
Realizing you don’t relate or want to relate to a certain type of music anymore definitely affected me and why music don’t hit the same/i don’t feel the need explore new artists
I listen to music for different reasons than I did before and I don’t even listen to much of the same music I used to listen to
    Just changing and growing

  • Feb 24, 2021

Ngl I feel OP and I'm not even that old, it's just most new age rappers don't hit and sound like a former shell of their inspirations. Less outstanding work is being produced and most acclaimed rappers have either fell off or don't drop frequently anymore

The funny part is music has evolved and gotten so much better in recent years. Early 2010s s*** sound dated.

Its just that the artists themselves back then were more intriguing and relatable

    examples?

This time 3 years ago i was heavy on youngboy kodak xxx uzi all the young niggas now i barely listen to rap and mostly lofi and jazz
I still appreciate new artists and albums but don’t get connected that much anymore
I also loved the idea of being up to new artists before everybody else but now i just don’t care that much anymore

    “purity of listening”

You must’ve been stanning mid then

    Bro do you produce?

When you hear music that is truly amazing you don’t need to focus of any technical elements like production, you just feel it

Whereas when you hear mid it’s easy to say it’s because the production/vocals are bland/derivative/lacking in character etc

The music I stan doesn’t suffer from the latter

some music just hits more when you’re in a certain phase/era of your life
when you’re out of that you don’t relate because you’re not that person anymore
i get what you’re saying to other ppl tho

Personally one of the biggest reasons my favorite rappers....well remain my favorites are not only them producing quality work but listening to them during a certain period in my life and their music usually takes me back. Another reason why I don't really connect to these newcomers tbh

Maybe I'm too nostalgic or something

Complete opposite, as I’ve gotten older I’ve enjoyed it more. Listening to music I would have thought was wack 5 years ago.

Rn feels like right before the blog era started when it wasnt a lot of good music and we needed some new s***

tbh we’ve been saying this for years but it isn’t coming. This is for a lot of reasons, one of them being that there’s no gatekeepers anymore. Someone ITT mentioned that we aren’t at the mercy of MTV and s*** and while it means more talent and it also means saturation.

We’re never going to have non niche artists anymore imo. Everyone wants to get on the playlists so they make music that would make it instead of worrying about making great albums.

See this is what worries me about the future of rap, like are we going to see another hard hitting classic to the level of GKMC again?

Lack of a new cast of interesting stars.

    Thats all.

Music is music its either dope or nah.

“Cast” says a lot about how so many of you on here even engage with music
